yup only 4 months but jerry said breed him to a black hen and I will get 75% blue from his offspring let see how that will go I trust him so I will give it a go if not I have a blue lace hen ready to go as well

good question he said the other 25 % will be mix color and cull birds ... but he said with this guy I will give me a bigger range of blue to work on or many color of blue will come out of this guy im keeping my finger cross we will know or at least I will get the is ready to breed in 5 months from now

don't get confused kid...

black x black = 100% black...

blue x black = 50% blue 50% black...

blue x blue = 50% blue 25% black 25% splash

splash x black = 100% blue...

splash x blue = 50% blue 50% splash...

spllash x splash = 100% splash...

all normal blue chickens have a blue lace... that just shows the quality of the bird... you can see lacing on my blue OEGB hen named "drama mama"...

a splash rooster looks like this... they don't look like a blue at all...

btw, i have that rooster's brother... but in blue... very typey...

btw... the same rules apply to fawn... that's why cara's white rooster was split for "cocopop" but the truth was that he was a khaki rooster... khaki means he has two copies of the dun gene... the same as a splash... so that khaki cara has will give you 100% dun/fawn birds if you breed him to a black hen... and i also think that's where joey is getting those white roo's too...

see what you can do by just learning some simple genetics... i really hate sport colors... i don't like splash, and i don't like khaki... but i really like fawns and blues so i have to keep a splash roo or khaki roo to keep breeding them to black birds...

HTH...

Ken - 4 months old? What a cutie! I don't see a lot of that Blue color around in the Serama circles. I have a giant puff monster cochin about the same age, and the same color! He's a total oaf, the largest, most uncoordinated, scaredy-cat rooster you've ever seen! Jake- you know who I'm talking about!! But we love him anyways..

Ra_ I like your idea of a large co-ed flock that gets a long well. But how do you then determine the parentage of the offspring?

So all my babies are so far doing really well. I have one, my little brown one, that is staying really small. I see it eat, drink, and mingle just like all the other chicks. I really hope its NOT a micro. I don't want it to have a short life

oh and i have a blue giant cochin roo that's a scaredy cat too... he's so gorgeous though... but when he runs away from me, he stomps over everything in his path... including his hens and other OEGB around him... he's so much fun too...

Gumbii- what book(s) did you read to learn all your genetics? I saw one offered through SCNA, but its $130 for the book. It looks interesting, but then its a choice between the book, and an incubator.

i like genetics... when i was collecting leopard geckos, i learned all about their genomes and color variations... chickens is no different... although not as complicated as leopard geckos... it's very simple, basic and will never give you any surprises... unless you breed serama... LOL...

but i learned a lot from just toying with the chicken calculator... i just thought.. what would i get if i crossed this and this... and that was only half of it... another thing is this forum... there are a lot of great threads on this board... love it... i still don't under stand all of the alleles but i just know some basic stuff... and since i only have a couple of months in this hobby, i'm sure i'll learn more as we go on... i want to learn leg color next...
