We have our first farm animals we got 5 hens and 1 rooster also a male and femal pekin ducks we had them Mar 2nd they were raised together because thats what we were told at the store. Now my male pekin duck is so mean to the hens they wont step foot out the coop. He tries to mate with them i really havnt seen him try with the female duck. he is also mean to our rooster. Iam at a loss i dont want to give him up but i cant go on like this we really dont have the means to make another coop for the ducks. If i give the male away will the female be lonley?? She does hide in the coop also with the hens? any suggestions. Thanks so much

You need to separate your drake from your chickens asap, he will eventually mate with them and it is a death sentence for your chickens, Can you make him and your duck a separate area away from your chickens? he will most likely be ruthless to her, some drakes are just that way, Then i would find him a new home. Then maybe find another duck for your duck, although if she was raised with the chickens she would probably be ok being an only duck. forgot to say

Pekins make wonderful pets and as long as he doesn't have any chickens where he goes he'll be fine, and if your duck was raised with the chickens she'll be fine too. All the best in finding him a good home.

well we sent him to a good farm not too far from us with a big pond and lots for him to do. Was Sad but the chickens, rooster and female duck are doing great did not take them long to get out of the coop. Felt like a sap when i gave him away but they said he is doing great there too. :)

Thats great news, I know it's hard to part with them, I had to do the same with a drake that I loved but the boys were fighting and I knew no one would want a 9 yrs old drake so I had to give up my younger one. I still feel bad every time I think about him. But when you saw how much better the flock was I'm sure you knew you did the right thing.

Yep I did and thank you for your help i didnt know what to do. I really like this website so much info and good info from people who own them :) I gave my hens a speech last nite i said you better lay me an egg if you happy now. And she did couldnt belive it. although that is only our 2nd so far we just got them March 03 as little chicks so they are ahead of the game. Thanks again for your information you saved my flock.

It is hard to give up your babies, I know. I had to find a new home for my two Pekin drakes b/c they were fighting with each other and my male Rouen over our single female Rouen and nobody was happy. I was able to bring them to a waterfowl rescue place here in NC and I know they will be well taken care of. It is sad, though.
