I just acquired a 5 week old mallard (the previous owners said that it is a mallard) and that they weren’t sure of the sex. This is our first duck. We have a flock of chickens. So, first of all, is it in fact a mallard? Secondly, can you tell the sex by 5 weeks? If yes, what do you think we have here?

Couple side notes:
1. It chirps a lot. Sweet little chirps. Slow chirps when my dog, Bria, is out of sight and fast chirps when she sees her bff again. I’ve heard a few semi-loud honky noises, but they are rare.

2. It has imprinted on our dog. She can’t make a step without the duck under her feet. I imagine buttbeak is uncomfortable, but now my dog is getting a feel of what my life is like with every living thing within our fences. I’m not gonna lie, it feels good to be understood finally.

2. It has shown my 16 chickens and 4 cats that it is the BOSS. They steer clear. My 7 kids want to love it, but it keeps trying to show them who’s boss, too.

3. I haven’t noticed and greenish feathers, but, at 5 weeks, I don’t know if I should or shouldn’t this early.

Any help would be appreciated!!
Thank you.

She's built more like the pictures I see of Rouens than like any of our Mallards, and honkers are generally female. If you post video of the quack, @CayugaJana can probably sex her.
It looks like a Rouen to me too. To me Rouens look like big mallards but the striping on the eye is different. If you get a video I could probably tell you.

Pretty sure it’s a female. What a little stinker. She likes to eat your creeping Jenny too, huh?!:lau

Your dog is so patient.:love
