MALLARD THREAD...not rouens, Mallards!

Pics
We have never clipped our mallards wings. They do not leave our fence unless they are escaping my children chasing them. They always fly back in, though. They grew up with 2 Pekins and they do not like to stray far from them. I am hoping they will continue to stay.

The only time we have clipped our Ducks wings was when first introducing them to their pen, their pen didn't have a top to it. but that was over a year ago, haven't clipped since. The only time they fly is when I open the coop door to let them free range. Their flock includes 2 Mallards and 2 Khaki Campbells. I'm not sure if they wont fly down to the lake because the KC's are heavy birds and can't fly or what but they never fly. I wish they would though, would be neat to see my ducks fly.

I've just enclosed their run with netting; that way everyone can still fly around - I was given a couple of call ducks when I started up and they came clipped.
They would still fly around with my mallard but had such poor control that they would land badly or in the wrong place.
Crispy would fly up on to the wheelie bin and Charlie the call drake would try to follow, but he'd end up overshooting or falling short. This was happening every day all round the yard and eventually Charlie hurt his leg because of it.

I know netting off isn't easy or in many cases even possible; but if you have the means to do it then it makes life easier in the long run and my ducks love flying so much I wouldn't want to take it away from them now!

So excited! My Mallard eggs came in the mail not 10 minutes ago :)

My mallard drake is 6 months old now and he is still not getting a green head. His body has quite a bit of grey in it and he has a white ring around his neck but no green in his head. When should he start getting his green head?
