Mama Heating Pad- barely warm

My "highly reliable" candy thermometer is hanging a little over 110 resting on the pad (actually got up yo 111.7. Clearly I'm from the south since that barely feels warm to me. View attachment 2575559

I'm used to humidity. Guess that's what a dry heat feels like. LOL

I wondered if the warm ambient temps might be affecting the 'feel'.

110 should be fine, especially since it's not very cold where you're at. The chicks will press against the pad when they need to warm up, otherwise they'll be wandering around.

I'm resurrecting an old post but I'm having trouble too now. I have made the Mama Brooder Pad out of a wire frame and it's a cave side. I have it wrapped in two layers of fleece, and Press n Seal. When I did this before, the ground temp was about 85°, 105° touching the top. Now I can't get the ground temperature any higher than 73°.

Is the heating pad warm to the touch? If so, then it is warmer than your body temperature.
A hen's body temp is 105-107F. The goal of the MHP is to simulate that warmth. I don't think you need to heat the ground under it.

Thanks. After an hour or so the surface temperature was 85, and the temperature against the heating pad was 105. So I think I got it figured out. Sometimes I wish we could delete posts.

Here are a two pictures from a few years ago. One shows them in a cardboard box brooder with the MHP. They stay inside for two days. The second picture is in the outdoor run. The MHP now has an old pillow case covering it. I will say we got really nice weather the first week we had them.
