Blooie: my 9 littles are still using just the small pad. I know I need to give them the bigger one, but my work and home schedule are insane right now. Hoping that they'll be ok with the small pad until my schedule lets up next Wednesday. (that's when the next batch is due)
Thanks, LG....I knew we'd talked about it but couldn't remember if you'd said what you ended up doing. I'm sure, knowing you as well as I do, that those 9 Littles are doing just fine as things are, so don't stress over your schedule. There's time when the new hatch comes along.
And we removed the plastic from the run today. It must have been 90 degrees in there - today's temp hit 80! Um, I am still in Wyoming, right? I know we'll still get some chilly nights, but we put up a wind block to keep the wind from blowing directly on the Tinys. They are still in the pen in the run with their cave and Mama Heating Pad, but it's been set down to 3 for the last four days and they've done great. I may bump it up to 4 for tonight because now the run is open, but we'll see. I'll check on them tonight and if they look comfy I'll leave well enough alone. They did really well exploring outside of their run today. They earned a couple of well placed pecks on the head from the Bigs, but it didn't take them long to figure out what their "boundaries" were. We only had them out for about 2 hours, then we herded them back into their pen. They weren't real eager, either - they rather liked those big patches of sunshine on the floor!
It took 6 days, but they finally decided to sleep in their cave. They had been going in and out during the day, but until tonight they would not go in it at night. There so cute with their little tail feathers starting to grow out.
I'm glad it finally worked for you! Wonder why they hesitated....they usually take to it right off the bat when they're really little! Every one of mine did, and I'm now on my third batch, plus Scout. Love the little tail feathers peeking out, but what I really think is cute is when they stick their heads out and look left, right, then left again before they pop out!
Best kind of kid to have. Mine (all 3 girls) knew nothing and waited for Daddy to come fix. (Just like me) I've learned more about repairs and actually myself in the last couple of years since getting into chickens. : D
Got serious envy at your southern coop. Fabulous!!!!! I have one 8' X 12' dog kennel coop and a 4' X 6' one. One 12' x 12' wooden pallet one that you can see by going to the interview page in my signature. So far that's the only pictures I have on here. You'd think I'd learn how. Son in law promised to teach me but just did it for me instead. sigh
Was raised by a single mom. We did most things on our own. It's funny how quick I have come to depend on my husbands abilities and now my sons! Don't get me wrong, I;m pretty capable and can do it myself. But it usually takes me longer and doesn't look as good. So, why shouldn't I? )
I have serious envy of all your coops! Holy smoke. I have a feeling, I could definitely add a few more with time. You know, for breeding, what have you!

Blooie, I think we have changed positions. It's a high in the 70's today. Tonight down to 50. We actually put tarps up over two sides to keep the wind off!
Here's a couple pictures while I was hanging out and watching chicken TV.
Catching some afternoon sun rays.
Flapping her little wings.
I think they are doing good. Seem to be growing quickly. And seem to be happy little chicks. This is so fun!
Hey, we are practically neighbors. But I'm in NW La and our problem is gonna be the heat this year. I've got my growout pen in the shade but I've got to get the handyman to finish it. I've got babies coming due out of the 'bator in a few days. They won't need much extra heat added except at night. When I had the Sebrights 2 months ago it was still cold and they consistantly stayed in the feather dusters I had bunched together across the space from the overhead heat lamp. So I'm thinking they may just need those down he in the south in this heat. I did very well with just plastic shower curtains on my open coops last winter. I'm going to do it again. You place sounds great.
I've lived most of my life in Louisiana. That's where I was born. Lived in Mississippi years ago when I first married. Been in Louisiana for about 20 years. Only been back in Mississippi for a year. But it's literally on the border. Really about the same either way. LOL
I am Blown away by the chick cave. New to this site and I love it already. Just got my first five chicks and I am super excited for the fresh eggs and the fun they will
be. Thank you all.
