Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Blooie, You are not a bad chicken Mama, you are an EXPERIENCED chicken Mama. You admitted to checking your first chicks every minute just like the rest of us did with our first ones.

My second batch were raised by Zorra in the barn. Yeah, I went down ALL the time. First to open the barn and let the girls (and Zorra and "her" chicks) out. Maybe mid day because I had stuff to do out there and again to give the girls their night time scratch and close up the barn

Remember the hiney chewing I got from Miss Bee when I was so upset about the mess and cleaning the waterer all the time and "they don't like me!" stuff? Best thing that ever happened to me!

Shoot, every morning it took me over an hour to get them all out of the brooder and into a box, change the water, check the temperatures, get out the old bedding (which was usually soaked), dump the feeder and give them fresh, put in fresh bedding, fluff it all up, then catch them and put them back in the brooder. Most folks don't mind any of that one bit, and that's great for them, but I was so stressed out I almost gave the whole batch away! Ah, this is sooo much better! Keep 'em close until they "get it" then out they go!

I don't recall hiney tasting????

...maybe a few well placed questions as to why you were doing all that stuff?

I didn't even do all that nervous Ninny stuff for my own babies, so couldn't imagine anyone going to those lengths for a bunch of chickens.

You know, I was thinking that I got a hiney chewing, but my old memory being what it is I decided I'd better do a little fact checking. I estimated the time span when I was at my most frazzled, did a search on the old thread, and found what I was looking for. Boy, was I ever high strung back then...that's probably why I remember it as a good old fashioned hockey check!! It clearly was not and here I've been saying such things. Shame on me!!

So you are absolutely right and I apologize for falsely remembering your excellent advice as something it most definitely was NOT!! I got a gentle coaching, and it was not only right on the money but I think I owe more to that exchange than to any other things I've read since! What would I do without you? Love you Miss Bee! And don't ever stop giving common sense advice to people like me!

And, that, my friends is... I think why some newbies find it offensive to receive advice. Unfortunately, when the advice is contrary to what one is doing, or thinks they should be doing, it is frequently taken as criticism. Love you both!

I am guilty of being a little nervous the first day and a half with this group of chicks. It was my first time using the MHP and I needed a little more faith. The chicks are doing so well that tonight I will open up the whole coop for them as they were really all over the place this morning running around being chickens lol. Thank you Blooie for sharing your experience.

I think I was trying not to make fun of you and not bang my head on the wall at the same time, but it sure came out sounding condescending, alright! And for THAT I apologize!!!

I'm just glad you didn't tell me off for it all, as folks on BYC usually do!
