Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Okay, so I don't need to be concerned with the temperature being a measurable 95 degrees etc. as it would be with an overhead lamp? That makes sense being that people are using this method for chicks outdoors. After-all a mama chicken's internal temp can't be that high, as long as the chicks can snuggle up against the pad as they would her that makes perfect sense. Why is this not the commonplace way to raise these little chicks??

No need for a wrench, I just use my fingers. To make adjustments, just hold both nuts and turn the bolt (instead of turning each nut individually). I didn't think to look at carriage bolts; I suppose the rounded heads wouldn't be significantly less sturdy. Now that I actually have the bolts I should have bought some even longer than the 5" because once you have the pad underneath and have needing built up you lose some height. Oh and if you go with quarter inch I think you'll want to make sure to go with fender washers. Personally I prefer fatter legs on it with a bit more footprint.
We're not holding up a truck here...haha!
No need for washers at all if you use the pronged Tnuts in the wood....
...that's the beauty, no loose nuts or washers. It stays relatively tight, minus the thread class tolerance.
I've used this leg system this for 3-4 hatches, it's plenty sturdy and highly adjustable.

No problem, just wondering if anyone on the thread remembers someone having success or an issue with an "off-brand." I was about to cancel the order and just go with the tried and true Sunbeam but I see that it already shipped. Maybe I'll turn it on when it comes Monday and see how it does after it's running for a while.
Yes, they have used other pads. The critical thing is that 2 hour (or sometimes less) shut-off. Any pad that doesn't do that or that has a setting to "Stay On" that you can select will be fine for the most part.

It's been an ongoing issue with Amazon's Sunbeam heating pad listing don't always show the correct reviews and/or the product decriptions for the pads pictured. Makes it hard on us when we absolutely have to have that feature. Before you mail order and wait for one, check your nearest Walgreens or Walmart. Many of us have picked up our heating pads there. I got my big one from Amazon with the link I have previously provided but I had no trouble finding them at Walmart (after the fact, of course) and that's where I bought my first one, the small one. Just look at the boxes carefully and watch that for auto shut off. The pad doesn't even have to have the digitlal controller! Good luck!

If it helps, it's "Leap Year Baby" without the vowels

I'm stoked to see others taking the idea and coming up with some neat versions of their own!

You're off the hook. I don't expect anyone to remember ;)

I've seen it mentioned in a lot more places recently, about the MHP, so it's picking up some traction. Its a good thing, for sure!

Because it's not practical for large quantities of chicks.
