I had 8 hens go broody at once right in the middle of some of the hottest weather we have had in a while now the chicks are between 5 and 7 weeks old they are all still with their moms in separate pens in the coop with chicken wire cages around them we just build around where they decided to set but now three of the hens are laying again and they still have their chicks all of them are pros no first time moms but I have never had this happen does anyone know if this is normal are should I take the chicks away from them they are still very protective they all get outside time at different times. Any suggestions would be great

Hi, I just found this forum, and lol, have basically the same problem. I had my favorite hen sitting on dud eggs for about a month, she went out and sadly, I found her dead in the paddock, don't know if she had been kicked or not or drowned in the rains/puddles, not sure. anyway, i have two other hens that decided they were to become broody, and my 2 bantams take turns trying, but don't show much interest after a few days.
it's been horribly hot here too, and stormy. 2 chicks hatched overnight, a third hatched but didn't survive, for whatever reason the hen kicked it out, and although i replaced it, the next time I checked, it had passed :(
anyway, both hens have about 4-5 eggs left under them, in addition to the two chicks.
I hope someone answers you as well because I'm trying to figure out the logistics of where to move them, how and when. I have a huge coop but they've layed under the coop. (not good for the rains coming daily), and I don't know if I can move both hens, eggs and two chicks all together to room in a different location, or does each group need to be separated?
thanks, susan
