We've been super wet here in South Carolina, USA also. I will tell you what I do if you promise not to laugh because some may say it's a wives' tale but so far it has worked for us. Our chicken run is 14 x 16 feet, covered, with the coop inside. We use deep litter method and we have taken a clear gallon storage baggie, put water in it about 1/4 of the way and dropped half a dozen pennies in. We have one at each end of the run and so far very little if any flies! (we clip it to the hardware cloth)

I think it has something to do with the sun shining on the pennies through the water that bothers the flies.

I'd try the fly traps too! They work out by my horse pens...but they do stink!

I'm on the fence about Roos since I had an Americana Bantam basically kill my best Bantam Cochin hen. I'm trying to give my silkie rooster a chance and so far he's very sweet with his 3 ladies, but boy is he loud even with a collar! Right now he's in time out inside the garage. Haha
I say if they're aggressive in any way, then soup pot they go even if they're too friggin gorgeous! But that's just me and that's how it is with any animal here, if they can't be nice to people or their other critter friends then they can't stay here. But like you said your guy could just be being a jerk because of the activity going on, so he might settle down.

This same crazy lady went after the girl that moved to the house next to hers (there is my house a middle house this newer girls house and then crazy ladies place) she treated her like garbage to specially when the girl asked crazy lady not to block her drive way any more I originally the new girl was just being catty (crazy lady has a mini car I want to burn it) but I'm pretty sure now crazy lady blew it out of proportion and acted a fool towards the new girl. I mean it's so annoying she was more then fine with us and our chickens and had no issue with getting free eggs any time she needed/wanted them. now she is just a total nut job she makes me sick how can you act nice and say nothing is wrong then go nut job like she did GRRRR. and thanks for the old wives tip will see about trying it out if it could help my not right? I kinda want to put horse poo near her house and let her see what having flies really bad is like. It's summer your bound to get flies. Even if I had no chickens she stikes me as someone who would most likely then blame it on my fricken dog!

There is a product I recently bought on Amazon called Victor M380 Fly Magnet Reusable trap with bait. You add water, hang wherever, and watch it fill with flies in no time. You can even get a better price if you buy a 4 pack. They really are amazing. Don't know if it would present a problem with having them sent to the UK, but the bait is non poisonous if that helps.. If you can find it in the UK or have it sent from Amazon, you'll at least have the flies under control.

Any one try peppermint and calendula essential oil mixed with I think water or something in a spray bottle to get rid of flies?

That lady sounds like a really bitter pill. Maybe her fly problem is from her property. Maybe the crazy woman has a stash of corpses buried in her yard.

Flies only hang around my coop and run in any great numbers if there's a lot of fresh poop, or if the weather has been wet. I haven't found any essential oils that really repel them. My mom really likes the traps. Keeping it clean with PDZ in the coop has been what works best for me, but I'm thinking about getting a trap also. I have 10 chickens right now.

We try and make sure the poo is picked up in the run and composted and or give it to family and friends for their gardens I'll admit on a really hot day it can smell a bit but I normally go out and till the ground if they are free ranging or pick it up in their run if I can. I don't like flies and yes I have a few in my house but does not everyone get flies in their house in the summer if their windows are open (with no window screen thingys) and open doors?

And my birds are molting and they look horrid! I'm wondering if the young chicks that passed away they were females so not so much chicks as pol's and coming on to roughly 18 weeks wondering if they might have gotten egg bound? as the ones that have passed are brahma x hybrid egg layers. So far they all seem healthy tho no real issues other then the ones dropping dead from who knows what they don't seem to have any injuries none had breathing issues etc and I'm at a loss and it bugs me.

still bothers me tho that she felt it was ok to stand there and cuss me out at my front door and then feel it was ok to hang her skinny crazy self over her fence and do it some more while I was checking on my animals! she has such a shty personality the flies might be there for her!

when I switched to fermented feed I noticed a significant improvement in the smell and consistency of the chickens' pooh; only caecal ones attract flies, and the chickens hunt those flies avidly. The birds drink a lot less too, and their pooh is a lot drier, as well as sweeter smelling. So if you gave it a try, it might help with smell and flies, and reduce wetness in the ground in your run to boot.
