Thanks for your response ridgerunner. I was pretty certain the Rock was a pullet, I have two and they look very similar although the other has less red in the wattles and comb. They both had dark legs and small head spots. I sent photos to the breeder who agreed pullets, but they where younger then. I have looked through my photos and I don't have anything useful to post, I will try and get some this evening. I agree that those photos show a very upright bird but actually I think the photos are not very representative. They both are usually quite flat backed. I will wait to see why you think with enter photos.
The behaviour I saw looked very much like what I have read as young cockerels acting up with pullets, I haven't seen the rock bumping chests or anyway engaging in dominance behaviour with the marans.
I wouldn't mind eating a little chicken, but I'm not sure the effort of processing would be worth the reward. If I ended up culling this little guy though, I couldn't waste him so I would process and eat him.
I'm pretty sure he is not a bantam. All my chicks are roughly the same size except my silkies (large fowl), which are a little smaller. I bought all of my eggs avertised as large fowl. In those photos he does look smaller than the barred rock, he is actually bigger, the perspective is strange because I was so close to the birds.
