Though I can look at the issue logically now, I had never grasped a concept ... the baby is in the yolk!

That sounds so stupid and simple but it had always evaded me. I have candled eggs in the past and always been disappointed at seeing nothing. So after reading a piece on here I thought I'd try it again with this batch. My first one I couldn't see anything, so I chose a different egg (a white one so I could see clearer was my thinking) and checked again, and on seeing nothing was about to put it back when I saw a 'spider' and realized I've been doing it wrong! What I saw was exactly as the picture on the #Brinsea details I printed for my first hatching.

I am so excited, we have one viable egg with a chick forming!! Now only time will tell! 😁

Congratulations!

Incubating and hatching chicks is magical! I say that and I've hatched several hundred silkies, but it never gets old! It's quite addicting, actually!

Be sure to update your post! We'll be excited to see your new chick!

I have 9 eggs in the incubator, and left 3 with the girls hoping someone would be broody, but no joy lol.

Bought them as 'various breeds fertile' on ebay, so various coloured eggs. Looking forward to seeing what colour birds I get so I can distinguish them one from another. But you're right, it is very addicting.

I miss buying eggs on eBay when I lived in the states. I’ve never seen them sold on the Canadian eBay. Not sure if they are allowed since they don’t allow it on Etsy or Amazon. I think on eBay it may only be allowed in the US and UK.

Thought I'd update this ... Out of the 9 eggs, I got 4, 3 boys and one girl. My girl has started laying and thinks she's 'the bees knees', at least till the older girls correct her. Of the three boys we still have 2, who both now crow in the morning. They are separated from the girls, but they still want to impress. Michael likes to dance and show me what he's found, but would 'run like hell' if I went near, whereas his younger brother just tries to keep out of his way.

Just been out to put another 'temporary' roof of the run so that I don't get wet waiting for them to go to bed. Hopefully secure enough to do us another year (or hopefully much longer). Rented accommodation, so can't build a permanent structure.

😁

It's not actually in the yolk, exactly.

These pictures give a good idea of of what's happening inside the egg at various stages of development. I'll put them behind a spoiler in case some people don't want to see photos of partially developed chicks.
