We have a dozen guineas, 11 wks old, that we are trying to let free range. We've done everything by the book up to this point - they were inside with a heat lamp for 6 weeks, outside in a fully enclosed coup for 3 weeks and for the past 2 weeks have been in a larger outdoor pen area with access to the indoor coup. We let a few out to free range last week (just for a few hours), knowing they wouldn't stray far from the rest that were still in the pen. Sure enough they stayed along the perimeter of the fence. We did this a couple more times, with success.
This week, we finally allowed all of them out of the pen together to free range. They very quickly took off to the woods area near our neighbor's property. We were able to get them back and back into the pen. Today, they did the same exact thing when let out. Is there a way to get them to stay closer to our property? I know they love to roam and it's in their nature. We're worried they won't come back. Hints, insight, suggestions, all appreciated.
(And yes, we do use millet as a treat)

Guinea do what they do so don't be broken hearted try keeping them up til they are a bit older and more grounded you might also try calling them as you give treats twice a day so they know your call and can call them home:)

I am new to this as well. My guinea are about 12 weeks and have been in their new run and coop a week. I will keep them there at least 4 weeks, maybe up to 6, till I start letting them out in pairs. It will be quite a while before I ever let out a large group, if I ever do. My idea so far is to let them out in small teams when I am ready to let them free range. I'm not sure how it will work, but they are wild birds, so, the best laid plans of guineas and men...
Anyway, it would be nice of you to keep updating, as I have 8 more guineas in the works and will be in your boat soon.
