Mandarin Duck thread ( for posting pictures and discussing)

Pics
Hey everyone thanks for this thread. It has got me interested in these amazingly beautiful ducks (common in numbers maybe but uncommonly beautiful IMO). I have been researching and there seems to be a lot of opinion/experts out there. Some say one thing some another. Very confusing. Here is my situation...I have 10 black swedish ducks on a 1/2 acre pond. I would like to add a pair of Mandarins to the pond but don't want them to get beat up by the other ducks. The swedes are only 2 months old and 4 of them will end up in the freezer eventually so there will only be 6 on the pond (2 males/4 females). If I put out multiple feeders do you think the Mandarins and maybe wood ducks later will be ok? I plan on pinioning their wings so they won't fly away. Some of the opinions I have read say that 'exotic' or wild type ducks should only be kept in an enclosed aviary with others like them. Others say they will get along fine. Since most of you are experienced not only with this duck but others what do you think? Thanks!!!

IMO, I think they might still wander away if left free. Mine are getting more settled down , but I think if they were out they'd leave. They nest and roost in trees. Plus they're smaller and being pinioned (mine aren't) would make them easy prey. They cost too much for me to chance it, so they will stay in my aviary:)

Well they won't be free.  The pond and the corresponding 1.5 acres are fenced...it just doen't have a 'top' on it.  They couldn't get out if pinioned.

Oh.... I wish I had a pond and fenced area that big!:) Well maybe someone else can give you better info on dealing with that type of situation. They really are beautiful and neat to have!

Is this a wood duck or a mandarin I just received it in the mail I will post more pictures if needed

Wood duck. When you were buying it how did you not know what you were buying?! I have great comparison I need to start a thread for one day.

Any one have any good thoughts on how to catch my Mandi hen??? I am working on their pen and I moved them but she got out and is with m Call ducks. I went out last night to try and catch her but she flow to one of our bigger ponds=(???

Sleeping darts lol try and put food in the place she normal eats and then just wait and try to get her or finish you pen and bait her in the pen

I wasn't sure because this is my first pair of wood ducks and I had never seen the yellow around the eyes and I heard somewhere that drake wood ducks don't have webbed feet so I assumed and thought the hens wouldn't either and she does. Also aren't wood ducks bigger in the breast area.
