Mandarin Male Duck Confusion

We have several mallard ducks on our property and a couple of days ago a Mandarin male duck turned up and was following one of our male Mallards. It didn't look aggressive and so didn't think it was a territorial issue. Then some friends were walking around one of the small ponds about a mile away, and saw this same couple together. Has anybody else had any experience with this sort of thing going on? We aren't concerned about it, but are just curious as to know if this is a common thing.
