Mandated child abuse reporting

Here is my 2 cents worth. My SIL has been battling head lice with daughter for well over a year. She has not only cleaned everything in the house, shampooed etc etc but she replaced carpeting and all the furniture and linens. STILL they c ome back her only option at this point is to shave daughter's head completely. That is her next step.

So before you scream neglect think twice....you better have facts to back up neglect because that is not always the case with lice.

Personally, I would sue the crap out of the school, the teachers, the State and anyone else who pulled that crap if I were doing everything I could to fix the problem and was turned in for neglect. Nothing ticks me off more than this buffalo dung of teachers reporting stupid crap because "they have to"....parenting is my job teaching academics is the teachers.

I had 4 girls living across the street from me when I lived in my last house. They have had lice for 3 years. I treated them several times, and helped clean and wash everything, but their father would not keep up with it. I understand that there definitely are resistant strains to lice now. The schools in that county don't send kids home for it anymore. I did report it because there were other issues in the home, like drinking, leaving the children home alone at night, drug use, and excessive discipline. But Social Services didn't really do much. They have their hands full of more serious cases. Basically, if the kids are going to school, have clothes, a place to live, and food, everything else is ignored.

This parent might need to talk to the child's DR. I was just talking to a parent whose child has had it and it keeps coming back. She tried all of the over the counter remedies. She had to get a prescription from her Dr and he told her that the over the counter crap will no longer be affective. So this might just be the case, and the nurse offering to come to the home to help would make me mad as hell, like I was accused of being incompetent. At our schools,if a child has nits they are not aloud back till they no long find them, and the nurse will do a daily check, but the student will not be aloud to return till there is no sign! If the parent was doing nothing then maybe reportable, but it sounds like she is trying.
Talk to the head of the school and see if they will keep her out until the problem is rectified.

The problem is that of being a mandated reporter. It's not something you can necessarily choose not to do. It's not something to blame teachers (and the other mandated reporters, as teachers are not the only ones) for. It's a law.

I've reported twice in my seven-year career. Luckily, they were pretty clear cases of straight-up abuse. In one case, a parent was removed from the home only a few hours after I made the call. I won't go into specifics of what happened, but if you knew the sick, horrifying details that were later verified by doctors you would be very glad it happened.

This kind of stuff freaks me out! Ahhhh I think i'd die if my babies ever got lice! I keep them clean and when the go out iin public I always try and keep they're hair up. I home school but my kids do go to awana and stuff with lots of other kids. What's the best preventive methods a parent can do?

I remember getting lice when i was a kid living in Florida...
I remember my mom using the stinky shampoo and washing everything, etc...... and that was it... couple weeks TOPS.
Not 6 MONTHS of having it! Something IS wrong there.... NO way a house hold should have lice for 6 MONTHS... just gross.

Thanks so much! Hair spray I can do! I use a little gel/mouse on my son sometimes too. When is lice season?
