Hi, just building our coop in Manitoba and wondering how high the runs chicken wire should be? Have seen a few fox but not much else around here . Also wondering if other Canadians are heating the coop and with what. Heat lamp enough I'm -35???

I am in Calgary. We have foxes and coyotes. My wire is 6 feet high. Mostly to keep the chickens in.

I do not heat the coop. In fact, given the ventalation requirements you are going to see an awful lot of heat going skyward.

The birds are pretty hardy. I did put down a seedling heat mat and they liked standing on it.

Hello there! I live in your neighbourhood and have had my three hens for just a month now! I built my coop and insulated it. I have a thermometer in the coop so I can keep an eye on the temperature in there. If it gets too cold for them I'll bring the little darlings into the garage for a time. I'd love to share chicken stories with you. This is my first flock and I still have sooo much to learn!

Hi,
Our chicks arrive next Tuesday , I feel prepared but not growing up on a farm this is all new. My husband is working on our " coop" as we speak . we took an existing building and closed in a 8x8 foot corner , insulated the floor , walls and will vent the ceiling . We are thinking an exhaust fan would be a great idea as it is hot in there without any chickens!!!
