I have a chicken who fell in our coop trying to get down from the rafters (prior to putting netting up there so no one can get up there anymore). We put her in a crate due to two broken wings and what we thought was a broken leg. It’s been about 8 weeks, both her wings have healed but she is still limping around. Her leg does not appear swollen or have any injury noted to it aside from her not wanting to bear weight. She also won’t close her foot like she would if you touch her non injured foot. We also noticed a red raw spot under her belly and some “beak chattering” a few days ago. I hate to put her down. She still eats, drinks, and lays egg throughout this whole process. We just got her this past spring.

Did you witness her falling and getting injured? The red spot on her belly may be the start of a breast blister, which can eventually become a hard scab and abscess. It happens when chickens lie down on the ground putting pressure on the breast bone. Does she just lie around mostly or can she move around some? How is her quality of life?

Quality of life seems fine. She still lays eggs almost every day. We let her out of the crate to munch on grass or whatnot. She can move around plenty in her crate. We have newspaper and straw in there for her to lay on. We did not witness her fall. We found her lying on her back almost lifeless one morning when we opened the coop. We had a bunch of chickens start roosting in the rafters, that’s why after this incident we put netting up there to prevent them from going up there.

My roosts are 2 and 3 meters above the ground, or higher, and both have hard landings. But everyday chickens fall and flap and land on the ground, they are even pushed sometimes by older roosters and fall. I have had only one injury, where a hen fell from 1.5 metere, and got a head injury and injured legs. She was already weakened by a dog attack and should not have been allowed in the roost. But I can not imagine a chicken breaking 2 wings. What do you mean? Chicken wings are like armor, I can't imagine how a chicken falls and breaks them.

Fall injuries take a long time to heal on the legs. My hen still limps but gets around fine. How old is your hen? I imagine she is still younger since she still lays eggs. My hen is my oldest one, and after her fall she hasnt laid eggs, but she is totally healthy otherwise, other than a permanent limp and slowed down lifestyle.

You should not have to keep her in a crate anymore, but she may have trouble being normal again like your other hens, walking up ramps for example may no longer be possible. She may enjoy a private crate to sleep in on the ground. If you have roosters, she probably doesnt want to be bothered by them either.

Yes, she broke her wings but they have healed. When we opened the coop door the morning we found her with the injuries, she was lying on her back lifeless on the top our nesting boxes. From the research I’ve done just on Google, YouTube, and blogs broken seems don’t seem too uncommon in chickens.

I take her out of the crate but I don’t think she’s ready to go with the rest of the flock bc when I do take her out, I have to watch closely or other chickens will try to bully her.

Thanks for the reply.
