Maple Sugaring: Making Granulated Maple Sugar

This is awesome. I don't have any maple trees to tap, but my neighbor does. Perhaps I can trade a couple meaties for some sap.

The difference in the taste is also something to be considered. Maple sugar on my oatmeal, toast and waffles is so much better than store bought sugar.
Also i know there are no processing chemicals in my maple sugar, I've tasted them in store bought sugar and when u first open the bag u can smell them sometimes.
Thank you Frugal:)

I get the desire to do something from "scratch". So many do not know how to do the most basic things or know where their food comes from.

That is so awesome! I am looking forward to tapping my maples on our property for the first time this year and am definitely going to give this a go so that I have it in the back of my mind in case I ever need to make my own sugar in the future. Obviously it isn't cost effective but that isn't the point, is it! It's about being able to provide for yourself and your family independently and have valuable skills. Someday we might not be able to buy sugar, whether only temporarily or not and if you can make your own, you will be in possession of a highly valuable skill as well as a product that people may wish to purchase or trade for. Thank you so much for this tutorial. My only question is how long did this take?

So cool to see this. Some years we tap our trees but I have made only syrup and candy. I buy maple sugar from a local farm and love it for certain recipes - like when I want a strong maple flavor but do not want to add water. Maple ice cream is much better when made with maple sugar than syrup, because the water from the syrup makes the ice cream gritty with ice crystals. Also apple crisp is wonderful if you replace the sugar in the crumble part with maple sugar. Great stuff. Can't wait for tapping time.

That recipe looks wonderful Janet! I'll definitely be giving both making maple sugar and the ice cream a try. I've found that my body likes maple best of the caloric sweeteners (tested allergic to cane sugar). I've been paying $10 per pound for it but making it myself will be much more economical. I hope to tap trees one day to be self sufficient in this way also.

hello just wandering on your topic of maple sugaring @home...

What is a preferable speed that u use on your mixer? you found to be best at maintaining trough out the process.

great topic by the way. I remind me that always think and act for yourself kindly, so then we learns how to share without expectation of return.

I tried out your recipe for maple sugar and burnt my first batch. Yuck! Tried again using water testing instead of thermometer and it turned out fine. I'm pretty proud of myself. Thanks!
