First time hatching maran chickens, and I unfortunately only got 3. Now at 3,5 weeks they all seem alike. Combs and behaviour (fighting) all like, so probably 3 of the same sex?

I took a close up pic of ones head, would any give me an opinion or is it just too early to say?

(gotta learn me this vent sexing thing)

Sorry about that crappy cell phone pic, lmk if I should take a better one.

Look at the chicks back and see if there is any copper color on the tip of any feathers. My young Marans cockerel has this copper color right on the tip of some back feathers. My young pullets do not. I'm not sure if this is an accurate way of sexing Marans but it's worked for me.

Actually I did notice today that one I held were beginning to show copper, I will go out and have a peek. Thanks so much!

My cockerel started developing a large comb at a young age of around 4 weeks. It's so easy to tell on mine the pullets from the one cockerel. He also has now started crowing at the age of 5 weeks. It's so funny listening to him.

Three of mine have booted (feathers on their leg shanks and outer toe) the smallest is not feathered. I do not know how this came about. They all have the same parents. These photos where taken a few weeks ago so they are now a lot bigger.

Thanks for great pics! It is always good to have many so one can tell the differwnce in between them. Mine have combs starting to look like your rooster but the color is very pale compared to the roosters you have got. Guess a bit more time would tell.

One has a very recent pretty cobber sheen to his lower neck, other two has not. I assume he might be the cockerel then. Time will tell eventually I am sure. I have heard this breed starts crowing early :)

What type of maran is it? A black copper marans I guessing? Had a rooster of that breed. Did not start crowing early though. Started crowing at 20 weeks. Girls barely have any copper color though.

Sorry, yes it is a black copper maran :) 20 weeks you say? Late bloomer then
