We wanted to get 3 Maran chicks for their dark brown eggs.

Will they truly be that dark beautiful brown or does it depend on source and breed?
Farm store choices are Midnight Majesty Maran and FBCM.

TIA!

Daughter read it may be a crap shoot with no idea how dark they will be if we acquire thru Farm Store not a breeder.

Yes. You have to breed for that color or the quality can lessen. A lot of hatcheries claim that dark color, but because they breed for numbers first of all, it's not a guarantee

This past year is my first time owning Marans but I also believe the first few eggs they lay in the season are their darkest. From that point forward, they lessen a little each time in color. I believe I read that somewhere and mine have definitely experienced that phenomena. My girls are laying a speckled burnt orange color which is far lighter than their initial chocolate colored eggs.
