I have a pair of Marans who are about 7 1/2 weeks old. One is an obvious roo, and it's been obvious for weeks... But the pullet has feathers on her legs... Is that normal for a maran? I thought they were clean legged.

I think it depends on what color maran you have.

Black Copper Marans (Clean & Feather Legged)

Blue Copper Marans (Clean & Feather Legged)

Wheaten Marans (Feather Legged)

Blue Marans (Clean Legged)

Splash Marans (Clean Legged)

Blue Cuckoo Marans (Clean Legged)

Cuckoo Marans (Feather Legged)

White Marans (Feather Legged)

Gold Salmon Marans (Clean Legged)

I had Black, Black Copper, Cuckoo, and was working with a Birchin line. There were clean and feathered shanks in all the flocks although the Cuckoo breed pens definitely had less. It also depends on what line you are working with. My Fugate line threw a few feathered legs. My Braden line pair were clean legged and I sold them before I hatched any of their eggs. The Ripley rooster had heavily feathered legs. I had two roos of another line (can't remember which of the top of my head) and they were clean legged too.
