Just curious. I'm going to be picking a few up this weekend. I've kept laying hens for a couple of years now, but I've never been into showing or breeding. Not sure if I will ever be, but it does seem interesting so I'm wondering about the Marans. If they aren't APA recognized, then there wouldn't be a recognized breed standard...so can they be shown? Do some shows have classes for non-recognized breeds? I assume that it would be like a dog show--only recognized breeds?

Yes, you CAN show them. Since there is no APA standard written for them, the judge will probably place them according to condition and general defects and/or disqualifications. They wont go on past best of breed, though.

The Black Copper Marans have been accepted by the APA.

So there is a breed and variety standard.

All other varities of Marans would be shown as AOV Marans as a non recognized variety or broken out into Wheaten, Blue, Blue Copper etc.
