I have one hen who always lays a weird shaped and shelled egg. Full of ridges and shaped funny.

The marans is the darkest I get. Usually copper colored but dark. From a Cuckoo marans.

It's likely that the hen that lays the misshapen eggs had a bout with infectious bronchitis even though she may not have exhibited any symptoms. Wrinkled and misshapen eggs are a classic sign.

Edited to add the word wrinkled!

i had that two years ago in a bird I got and made the HUGE mistake of feeding the raw egg to other hens in the flock. They were mixed flock of hatchery birds. They ALL got it from the raw egg... whatever you do, don't feed it to the girls! Throw it away. looking back I can' believe it that I was that stupid, but I was. Probably still am, but only about other stuff, not that! LOL

I love the dark maran egg... I'm so happy I am expecting some maran chicks in a few days! The obtuse egg is interesting. Maybe you can sell them at a higher price as "works of chicken art!"

I never feed my girls eggs but thank you for the warning. I got that hen w/ a group of 4+ the roo. I intend to get rid of her and your information is very motivating to do it fast. I haven't yet figured out which of the four it is. As soon as I get some hatched out I intend to get rid of all four as I have no idea how old they were when I got them.

The woman who sold them to me must have known she laid these eggs but I guess she had no scruples. I know it's one of the Dels but I dont' know which one. I may have to set up a quarantine pen and wait til they lay and then see which one lays that egg. The shells are thin and the egg doesn't "fry" up well. I have only been using them to make scrambled eggs.

Should I not do that?

I'll bet if I post pics Speckled hen will know just by looking.

Oh as for the marans. These darkest eggs are the only ones I'll be hatching. I have five in the incu now.

They can get over it. If you like the hen you don't need to get rid of her. Just quarantine her and wait until she is all done and laying good eggs again and ease her back into the flock. In marans it wrecks the egg color, and they may not lay right until the following year, just so's you know... It does not pass through the egg either, so you can hatch them if you want and the chick will not carry the disease.

These eggs are so misshapened sometimes they look like ice cream cones, I doubt they would be a good hatch. I have such a hard time w/ good eggs. I do know she let up in the fall and just started again. I've been crushing up and feeding my egg shells to the birds but today I pulled out all these shells as I don't want to take any chances.
