100% hatch, with a little assistance on the last one, on all 8 French Black copper and French blue copper Marans that I received in the mail from Sebrightmom... She has some really hardy stock. One of the Marans hatched is a clean legged wheaten apparently it is a fluffy yellow chick. All 3 of the Cochin bantam eggs also hatched with a little assistance on the last one. Momma hen kept pushing it out for some reason so I brought it in and put it under a heat lamp. Seems ok so far... Hopefully it will survive the night and get some strength built up so I can sneak it back under the momma. Will post pics soon...

Hi cthrash1,

How did the hatching go? I got the same eggs from the same source. I was able to hatch all but one Blue and Black Copper Marans (10). It could have been 11 if I didn't drop one on day 2 when I was turning them in my still-air Hova bator.

Hi there!

WOW you could have had a 100% hatch on shipped eggs!!! Thats great!!! Hate it that you dropped one though

... I've done that before when I used to have my equipment, really puts you on a guilt trip.

Union is still sitting tight, actually tighter than before now that I set her some food and water in the box with her. When I candled the 6 Cochin bantam eggs last week 3 were thriving and 3 were not so now she has 2 white and 1 barred to hatch out of those if nothing happens to them in the next 4 days.
As far as the Marans go, I can't really see in them all I can see is the air cells. and in one I could see a little bit of space at the point end all dark throughout the center. The really dark ones I couldn't see in at all. So I just resort to the sniff test on all of them daily... I do have one that felt way lighter than the rest last week, I'm thinking it was a quitter.

Thank you for the encouragement on how well your hatch went on your Marans... Been hoping for a good hatch out of the 8 I have.

Just leave the Marans egg in there. I gave up candling on those from day 8 I can't see a thing. It was really a big challenge candling them. Good hatching Vibes to you and Union.

Believe I already have one male here...

With that big spot on top of its head I believe this little Barred Cochin might just be a male

Finally this little dude was the last to hatch and was very weak from being pipped for 2 days, had to give it some assistance... Then momma kept pushing it out to the corner I guess because it was very weak, and it was almost dead and really cold when I brought it in... Ended up getting spraddle leg because I put a tin lid in for food and before I could get some from the coop to put in it the chickie got in and couldn't get its footing so its legs are now bandaided together. This is why it is laying so wierd here...

Help me out on the bandaid method!! I have one like that since last night. Pipped for two days and legs are splyed and it sits on its but. Can you fix it this way? How long does the bandaid take?

How long the band-aid trick takes depends on the chick in my opinion. I've only ever had to do this to about 4 or 5 chicks, I've had a couple chicks that have taken a couple days and a couple chicks that have taken almost a week.
I use a piece a vet wrap for the hobbles/ band-aid trick. I use a strip about 3/4" wide, wrap it around one leg and press together leaving enough space for growth and so that it moves freely, then I wrap it around the other leg leaving about an inch of vet wrap in between the legs, legs should be placed at a natural distance apart, I press it in place around the second leg and back to the middle piece and clip off the rest. Wish I had a photo for you. Darn it! I love Vet Wrap it works great for so many things.

I can't wait for Saturday so I can run out and check on the eggs under my broody like every 2 seconds....

it's not at all like watching them in the incubator.

Hatcher is warming up for the 13 eggs that are in the incubator that go into lockdown tomorrow morning.

Doing thorough cleaning of the broody boxes today in anticipation for Saturday...my word does broody pooh stink and of course my BCM broody poohed on 2 of the eggs. I cleaned them off best I could and stuck them back under her. I have to say that she has been great, doesn't mind that I go in and scoop pooh from her box every day. The last broody I had wanted to take me out if I came anywhere near her. Gotta love 'em!

How's everything going for everyone else's up coming hatches?
