Marans Madness March Hatch Along.....

Update on my eggs: Day 10.

Well, I candled each and every egg (it was a lot. . .) and ended up having 100% fertility in the Black Coppers!!!!

11 out of 11 of the Black Coppers were certainly developing and alive!!

For the Wheatens/Blue Wheatens, about 6/15 seem fertile and developing. The rest are quitters and "not sure but I think it is a quitter."

I just now reeeaally hope the hatching goes well, as I hear it is the tricky part. I've got humidity ranging from 43-47 percent, as it likes to bounce around alot, so I hope I get the lockdown humidity percentage just right!

Update day 22:

March 7th hatch date is officially over. As of this morning, I have a mix of 10 Blue and BC Marans, 3 Ameraucanas and 10 from my flock mostly BA's. 4 never pipped. I cracked 1 of them out of curriosity and found out that it was indeed just clear (yellow).
The last three that hatched today were all CM's. 1 hatched without a problem but was a day late (I was told, normally for a still air bator sometimes this thing happens. Some spot in the bator are maybe a degree or two colder hence the late hatch).
The other two needed help to hatch. 1 have pipped and zipped halfway for almost 24 hours. It was in an awkward postion inside the egg (It appeared that right foot was over the head almost touching the left ear). Another 1 pipped in the wrong end (this egg was almost perfectly oval that the pointy end is hard to exactly identify). I put the eggs in a carton crate at Lockdown day 18. I was ready to toss it out but when I lifted it up, it was halfway zipped with some of its feathers already dry and hardly peeping.

Here is a photo of the late hatchlings: 3
Center- awkward position inside the egg. Right- pipped in the wrong end. Will these three be blue or black CM's?

Congrats on the hatch. I can't really tell what colors these babies are be by this photo....maybe you can post another photo of them. 1 Black and possibly 2 blues but the middle one is hard to see.
Cute little fuzzies!

Thats great news! Way to go!

I helped a poor little stuck blue copper out of the shell this morning after it had pipped late yesterday morning. It had zipped almost completely around but was stuck and the membrane was starting to dry out and was stuck to the baby in one little place. Little blue is in the bator resting now.

Here is the little blue copper that hatched yesterday.

OK all you Marans hatchers, lets talk candlers.
I know most wait till day 10 on Marans eggs to candle.
Today is day 10 for mine. And at day 7 too dark to see a thing.
What are you using to candle? Post pictures would be great if you have a homemade one etc.

All the babies are so cute,

the little blue copper.

aceschix, I know what you mean its been a challenge to candle the welsummer eggs.
Know I have even harder Marans eggs.

Well....I usually don't candle my own eggs during incubation (except just before setting to look for cracks), but I will candle shipped eggs. I used a Yuban coffee can flipped upside down with a hole cut in the side, it was pretty easy to cut out because the can is cardboard. I wired up a small light fixture in a metal electrical box and set the can over the top of it. I use a 10wt CFL bulb because it gives off lots of light and is short enough to fit in the can with out touching the top or the sides. The inside of the can is pretty reflective too so that helps alot. Sorry, I don't have a photo of it.
