Hi guys!
I used to have 3 Marans roosters and plenty of other hens (Marans and mixed-breed).
Last October I got 12 baby Araucana chicks. All of them made it and it was pretty even (unfortunately...) I got 7 hens and 5 roosters.
I used to have the Araucanas in a separate place, but as they grew older I let them free with the Marans & others (I open the chicken coops and let them free to eat some grass and weed). They were still very young, so they would always be together and wouldn't blend in with the other chickens. My plan was always to have the araucanas in a separate place when they got to the adult stage.
In february I had to go outside the country and will only be back in about two weeks. As I forgot to tell my family that the Araucanas needed to be separated, they just kept them all free in the same field.
Long story short, the Araucana hens started to lay and apparently the Marans roosters have been mating with them... Definitely not what I wanted, since I wanted to keep the pure breed.
My question now is: Assuming that the eggs they're laying now will be a mix of Araucana and Marans, will I be able to reverse that if I separate Araucanas and Marans from now on? This is, they will only be mating with Araucana roosters, so the next "batch" of eggs will be pure breed?
I'm sorry if I wans't very clear, this is my very first post here!
Thank you in advance for all your help!
