The nearest library here is, shall we say, lacking??
I have a friend that is always book hunting, so I will put her onto the SOP books. I wouldn't mind having the whole collection, if the prices were right.

Maybe if you don't mind an older addition you could find one on ebay or craigs list. I don't think that the Marans made it In yet. Don't know how much the beginning section changes with each up date.

I can only imagine that with each new book, that there would probably be more faults added? I'm also going to be looking on ebay and Craig's List as well.

Good morning, folks! Gosh - lots of posts here...I am not caught up yet, but wanted to ask maransgal - is this a good example of the tail type we were discussing (this gal is not one I am using in my breeder pen, btw - just the closest pic I could quickly grab):
Not Maransgal, but hope you don't mind if I throw in my 2 cents? What does her tail look like from behind? Is it closed, or more open in an inverted V or U shape? One of my pullets has a tail like that when viewed from the side, and very pinched from behind. Personally, I like to see the tail more spread, top to bottom, from the side, and a nice inverted V or U from the rear view. Just my opinion.

Hey, Nick - still catching up here, but there is a sketch that was posted on the Black Copper thread maybe a week ago - if someone hasn't posted it on this thread already, I'll find it & update the 1st opening post of THIS thread and let folks know. Thanks for the reminder!
As we go along, I'd like to add pics to that first thread as examples of things to cull for such as squirrel tail, side sprigs, incorrect leg/foot color, etc. - this was a suggestion by a couple of regular contributors to the Marans threads, and I believe it's a really good one - I am super visual in my learning, as I'm sure lots of folks are, so that will be very helpful!

It's definitely a "V" but the gap is not huge - maybe only 1 1/2"??? She is not large, either - not the smallest I've had, but she was culled due to: 1) mossy; 2) lack of size; 3) unacceptable (to me) shank feathering.
Folks, I want to post a reminder - this thread is for discussion on the currently approve SOP. It is NOT to discuss changes that should be made or things that "should have" been added or deleted. The SOP that we have is what we have. So - let's work WITH IT not against it. That's what this thread is for. Look at the SOP, look at your birds...do you see what seems to be a variance? Snap a quick pic & post it, and let's discuss!
I would love to talk more about this "station" - admittedly, I've not looked that closely at my birds to know if I have lowriders or Wilt Chamberlains. However, I will say that they, to me, appear to be balanced; that is, when I view them from a bit of a distance, the picture I see fits into a rectangle - not a squatty one, but one that is closer to a a square in shape, though still a rectangle. That probably isn't the best description, but it's what I see. Should we consider "station" as part of the "type" - that is, those things that should all be as standard as possible, without deviation?
