Marans - SOP discussion thread

Nice amount of feathering, better on the first picture than the second. mho

No carry over feathers to middle toe which is as described in the SOP!

Thank you, edgarmongold, for weighing in. To me, this is sort of a "medium" amount of feathering. Another follow-up question (sorry - should have asked this when I posted the pics) - what would the point deduction be for feathering much heavier, or much lighter than those pictured? I realize middle toe feathering would be a DQ, but - if it's TOO sparse or TOO thick - would that be something like a 5 point deduction? Or, more likely just a comment on the cage card without point deductions?

Arielle - I am not even completely sure that those pictures I posted are Marans - they are not my birds, the pics were sent to me & I was asked to post them so we'd have something close-up to look at.

As far as breeding for the proper leg feathering, I think it's mostly a matter of using a heavier feathered mate if featheirng is too light on offspring, or vice versa if too thick. Still, you can get some clean-shanked birds now & then. Two years ago, my flock's shank feathering was really good, and "mostly" consistent, but every now & again, I'd get a small percentage that were completely clean shanked. Just don't use what you don't want to see in the future.

We should be shooting for a medium feathering.

Mostly we see too sparse of feathering and it does not even consist of a full line down the shanks.

Check out the Langshans at the shows and that is where we should be at. mho

That is a point that has not been addressed by the Standards Committee and I will bring it up to them.

Keep in mind that you are not looking at a black leg but a slate from light to medium on the males to dark slate on the females for Black Copper.

TOENAILS? Holy cow. Guess we'd all best get some toenail pics so we can all compare toenails, too!

I've got a Black Ameraucana with pink toenails on both of her middle toes on her otherwise black legs. With those 2 pink toenails on an otherwise ALL black bird, one takes note of TOENAILS!

Edgar--

Thank you for clarifying the color of rooster and hen on the legs; and I think I have a good picture of the leg feathering.

If the committee doesn't define the toe nail color, does a judge not judge the color, or use his best/own judgement on that ? Or does it depend on the individual judge?

1/2 point for wrong toe color.

If not defined I do not know how a judge could take points off with no information to go on.

There is a total of 5 points for shank and toes so would think the cut would be like 1 or 2 points.
