Does anybody happen to know if the Pene blood in BC Marans goes back to France, or if this was done in the US?

The PENE blood was introduced in the USA by people wanting darker eggs, one sign is if you get males with the Carnation Combs.

I have no mite of any kind on my birds... I treat regularly for parasite and have a vet inspection monthly... No bugs at all....They would lose production and color in their combs... Sorry no mites or lice here... Just tired feathers... I would like to see an example of this bug I haven't heard of.... There are Roost mites here (never had them either) and their are lice... I haven't had much trouble with them... Did have an outbreak before I started using Pour on Ivermectic... Works great... that and DE keep my pens clean as a whistle.. No flies either.

As sad thing about introducing the Penedesenca blood is that it didnt improve the egg color... In fact it lost it... A few birds have still sliipped into the mainstream. Sad...It has made an impact on the gene pool.

send them over... I have heard of roost mites out here and mites that live off of the bird... but I have only seen lice that live actually on the bird... Never had a problem with anything like that long term. I put up netting to keep out the indiginous species of birds that can bring them into the coop. The Ivermectin takes care of the creepy crawly things. And the DE and sand dusting box....

Very interesting... I just looked up some articles... Can't say I have ever seen any on my birds but what a fascinating read.... I didn't realize a symbiotic realationship occured in MITES... I still say... get rid of em!!! Thanks snowbird! Ya learn something new every day... and my day has just begun.

You are totally my enabler, Luanne! Did I mention I love ya for it?!?

So once my taj macoop is built (re-built!) complete with breeding pens, etc., I guess I'm going to add some of your feather-legged babies, too. It seems to be true that no matter how big you build your first coop, you're back for more, eh?

I'm learning so much from all of you and I'm honored that Bev Davis has joined and is sharing her knowledge with us. Amazing!

External Parasites: Borrowed from The Chicken Health Handbook

There are 9 different species of Lice that can infest poultry. 4 are very common and problematic here in the U.S., there are also 12 species of Mites, of which 7 are problematic. Wait til you read about some of the diseases that are spread from external parasites.

Hmmm Indeed!

Any one out there working on blues? I have 13 blues from byc's bishopchickens... We have or fav cockerel roo who crowed and had red wattles and comb at 6 or 7 weeks. Only one feather of red/gold leaking on the neck, too many points on the comb , to big of feathers on the feet.) BUT otherwise looks good with good personality! I will post pics. Out of the 13 I have two pullets that to my new to the breed eyes think look true to blue, and not bad at all to the Marans standard.

So... Anyone want to post their "pride and joy" blues?

Me... Egg color will be my #1 in my breeding program, with productivity being second, and personality third, and the standard 4th....

Just for chit chat... I thought I would share the Blue Ameraucana cockerels that I put into the Marans cockerel pen "put down" the Marans right quick. However the Marans and Ameraucana cockerels out on free range work as a "team".

Interesting breed indeed. I am enjoying them so far!
ON

Welcome ON! Can't wait to see your blues!!!!!!!
