Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

berkeleysprings ,

I don't have, or plan to have, any Wheatons. But, if the white fluff is bad for the BCMs, why wouldn't it also be a "bad" thing in the Wheatons? Just because it is seen in a lot or all pics of the Wheatons, does that make it a good thing? The Wheaton roos are the same coloring as the BCM roos, except for the wing triangle, so what's the difference? I really don't know here, so I am asking. Does this also pop up in other colors as well? I would expect white fluff in the whites or splash, but not the other varieties. Surely someone knows this, and if no one does, why not? How can you write an SOP without these specific terms being brought up? Faults or DQs? Good, bad, or doesn't matter?? Maybe Bev and David can enlighten us, please?

SOP= Standard of Perfection

Therein lies the rub! Is it (the white fluff) a necessary thing for the Wheatons, or is it just a common fault. If it's a DQ, disqualifying fault, in the BCMS? would it be in the Wheatons also? I think the proposed SOPs need to clarify these types of things better, before approval of the APA. Once APA approved, wouldn't it be really hard to add to or change the standard?

I've been to the local Jodee Messina concerts and to the Earth, Wind and Fire concert. . . Clearly, my music tastes are a little diverse too.

I think my chicken preferences are getting more diverse too - - - BCMs, Speckled sussex, and I am dreaming about some good quality BLRW !

Hi - I just wanted to follow up on Debbi's request fro some better pics of my Marans. The rain stopped, actually had a little sun today. Louie the roo' is alittle young yet and the girls have him hen-pecked. I am hoping as he gets bigger he will straighten up and show some macho. Let me know what you all think. I have these and some Wellies. I am mainly interested in the eggs, but if these are okay birds for the breed I would like to get some eggs for the granddaughters to hatch, raise and show at 4H next year. Let me know what you all think.
Thanks,
anne

Hi Marans experts. I've got some questions regarding my 28-week old blue marans hen. If she is paired with my BCM cockerel, what will be the offsprings look like? Will the hens have some copper color around the neck? How will the roos' color look like?

here are the pics:

Fluff is a somewhat vague word, I presume you mean either the undercolour or the 'bumfluff' under the tail.
Undercolour varies with the 'e' allele and modifying genes for each variety.
E based birds such as self Black normally have black undercolour. the Cuckoo birds have this diluted to grey/blue due to the action of the Barring gene.
ER birds such as the BC & Birchen are similar.
eWh birds such as the Wheaten,Black tailed Buff & Columbian have white undercolour.
e+ birds such as the Salmons & Golden Cuckoo have a grey/blue undercolour.
White birds ,in Marans, should be white.

Wheaten cock birds are not the same as BC cock birds, there is far more difference than just the wing triangle.
Duckwing birds (Salmons) are also different to Wheatens.

The cotton Ball at the intersection of back and tail feathers. From what I have read and seen all the standards call for the wheaten males to have a gray undercolor and the female to have White. Is this possible or just something that is in writing ? My wheaten males have Light Gray undercolor and the cottonball. There is no reference to the cottoball in any of the standards as being a fault.
