Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

I have a 3 week old Black Copper Maran roo, and he has a small, clear, blister-lookin thingy on the underside of his beak. Is this normal? I thought at first it might be part of his comb/wattles, but I want to make sure.
That is definitely not normal but I dont have a clue what it is. . . Is it hard or soft? Does it feel like a bony growth? Does it seem to be fluid filled? Chick eating and drinking alright?

I am interested in this, I have never seen anything like it, and I have hatched and grown many many chicks.

I am also interested in his unique eye color. They look very bright for his age.

Has anybody done a comprehensive photo study on BCM chick down variations on up to adult plumage?
Hi,
I have attempted this in several varities of Marans but have only really follwed through with cuckoo. I did it because I was introducing a new line.

I also noted shank and toe feathering because I was starting with clean legged hens (Fugate line) and crossing with a well feather shanked roo (Ripley line) I am continuing the study this spring with most of the original one I photographed but I had to ditch a ton of them for carrying gold and recessive white.

Hi,
I tried it with chicks out of supposed Golden Salmon eggs or parents. But the birds were all mismarks or polluted with autosomal red. So all I ended up with was a diary of colors which Golden Salmon shouldn't be. I had everything from recessive black ;spangled ; millefluer; red duckwing; and melanized.
I did learn a lot about chick down, tho.
Best,
Karen

Anyone remember this chick that I asked about last year around February?

Here he is 1 year later.

What is he? Anyone know?

He hatched out completely yellow and turned this orange color as he was feathering out. Oh and I forgot to mention that he had several black dots that went down the back of his neck and on his back when he hatched almost like dorsal strips but, dots instead.
This male belongs to my bestfriend and is not from any of my birds just for clarification.

Drooling over those beautiful eggs! Can't wait for my kiddos to grow up!

Thank you! I am most happy with my Splash Copper gals eggs. She ceases to amaze me as her eggs are getting darker now even though she is 4 years old. I expected that they would not darken but they are.

I bet you will be delighted everytime you pick up and egg when your girls start laying. Everyday for me is still like the first with anticipation of what I may find waiting in the nest box.

Wow! That is strange....I have never seen this before. I hope others that know or may know something about this come by and give you their opinions. I am curious to know what it is. Has this chick has this since hatch or is it something that just appeared?

He looks to be BTB did he come from Wheaten eggs? I had a pullet BTB sport form mine once.

I'm thinking about doing a chick down study with the FBCM. I was just curious if it had been done before so I can compare results.

Dots on head with yellow chick down suggests BTB / Wheaten mix. ie: incomplete BTB.
