Fryer/broiler. I'm with desertmarcy and DMRippy on this. Not being mean, just saying what's true about the keeping and breeding of birds like this and calling them Marans. Technically, yes...but should not be allowed to breed. This young fellow with the gold chest is doing nothing but getting more and more of a gold chest.....some around the neck but just just speckled. I don't think this fits under the "maran" markings but I really don't know where he belongs! LOL Getting more pretty as he fills out. Anyone know which category he falls into...??

That was the first thought, but our vet took a skin sample from the area and found no mites under the microscope. I might treat like mites anyway.Might be scaly leg mites. Vaseline DE poultry dust etc even ivermectin people use
We don't spray any pesticides or weed killers on yard, so I doubt it. I see similar damage on the guy in pics that free ranges and on roos in pens. I don't see it on our Wyandotte/Sumatra mix that doesn't have feathered legs and I don't see it on our hens whether they are feathered or clean shanked. It's almost like the follicles where the feathers should come out are damaged. Thanks for the ideas. Any other thoughts?Could they be stepping in something (chemical) that is irritating the skin?
WetRx or Vaseline works great , try to do 2-3 times a week till it's gone.A few of our lightly feathered marans roosters have ugly scales and bumps on their outer toe/shank with missing feathers and bumps. Pictures included. The scales on the rest of the leg seem fine and our vet checked a skin sample for mites and found nothing. Is this a common issue on feathered shanks? Or is something else going on? Any ideas? Anyone else see this on their birds?![]()
