Marans Thread - breed discussion & pictures are welcome!

Sorry Ruth. I didn't choose my words wisely. The point I was trying to make was, I knew I was not going to use any of these boys for breeding.

Wow, you have really studied, and have good insights on your birds. Pictures can be deceiving, so it's always best to study and apply the SOP (in Marans the proposed SOP) and apply it to your own birds in real life.

Fused toes...I believe associated with the leg feathering gene, which may be why the French call for sparse feathering. I culled this girl, (who has heavy feathering, but fused toes); to the Ameraucana pen to make Olive Eggers because of this, and have not seen it show up in any siblings offspring. Other than that, and that she only lays a #5 on her best days, she stays in pristine condition, even being mated several times a day.
All she does is eat all day, and pull out the juvie Ameraucanas tail feathers as they run by. I'd send her packin' but she is just so beautiful, and was a good broody and Mama for a while...and I do grow fond and attached to certain birds despite their faults.

Awwww, Claire is a beautiful girl ! I know what you mean .... I have the sweetest BCM hen that is just a mess. She has a floppy comb and is overweight, but ohhhhh is she sweet. She comes running to me as soon as she hears the door open, and follows me around the yard. Her egg is no more than a 5 I would guess, but I sure love the girl.

Kathy, so hard to separate the emotional from the analytical. The great thing is that the BCM's egg is so distinctive that you can place them with other breeds and know which eggs are theirs, allowing you to keep them for pure pleasure

So true! Ya know, my darkest egg layer only lays 1/2 a dark egg. Each day she teases me with her egg. I get excited and pick it up, only to find the other side is that white chalky color. I gotta give it to her though .... she is sure consistent!

Ok I have another marans question (I'll have some extra room when I build my new coops). Which is easier to breed Wheaten or blue and black copper? What are some other varieties that might be easy for a newbie (still haven't decided if I should get another breed 4 might be pushing it)?

there is no one in here but me and the crickets right now... I really don't know... I like the BC's.. that is just a choice.. I don't know what is involved in breeding wheaton... I do love the blues though.. Pinkchick has some AMAZING blue birds.. she is very biased and I must say she HAS JUST CAUSE!!!

I think you will probably get a better response in the morning.. I can hear moth hitting the lights in here!!! ha ha.. There is a lot of research out there.. I think no matter what you get... Get it from a reputable person.. someone on here could help you... I can vouch for pinkchick on her blues... they are fab!!! I think that would be fun cause you get 3 colors from one breeding.. I think she even ships eggs.. Pm her if you decide to jump that way... You could search her out in here and see her posted birds.. Fabulous I say... just fabulous...

Geebs, thank you. That helped alot. And this is him after a molt right? So he probably had a little more red before the molt?

gvntofly--Here is what I see (and I am no expert) If I am wrong PLEASE say so. I am learning here.

overall quality I would say very nice. He has good color and size to him. I am questioning his tail angle. Is that too high? And another question--the ear coverts--they are on the dark side, will that make much impact on the color of his pullet offsprings hackle color?

I would like to know what on earth is going on with this rooster
. It is raining but I went to take pics anyway. This is what I saw. I knew he had some white underneath but was hoping that it was just him molting. When he isn't wet you don't see it hardly at all. What a surprise I had! Am I correct that this is not a molt? Is it as bad as I think it is?

Hi

It would be interesting to see a picture of the bird when it is dry. If the feather is white, I wouldn't use it in the breeding pen. I haven't come across this problem before.

Good Morning. I will post a picture. When he is dry it is hard to tell but the white "peeks" out here and there. Can you explain Bev the genetic reason for this. It would help me to understand why the melanizer isn't getting into the feathers completely. (If that is what is happening anyway)

Picture coming up. Also, his brother has the same issue.
