Thanks. If you look at the other, coppery one, his color is even too, which you would not expect with that much copper on him. The lightest hackled roo I had was actually "too black" and had not enough color on his hackles, and it was too gold in color. Then there was Lightning. His hackles are too deep of red color, and one of his babies doesn't have any color, one has only a little on her neck. Very little.

I am going to raise a crop sired by the dark-dark, single-color roo, and another by the roo that looks similar to Goody, over the same hens, and see what's what at that point. I'm kind of wondering if the darker, solid-coloring will be connected to egg color?

I'm not upset at all about the solid black girl. I have a pen of BBS clean legged that lays lighter eggs that I would love to use my good CBM blood to darken the eggs and add feathers to them, but I didn't want to cross colors. Lightning was so kind as to produce me a solid black, feather legged pullet, large, friendly, pretty, and I plan to cross her on my BBS pen to see what I get, of course, depending on what color egg she lays.

Hey Tina --

I know that Will has been having some problems with his email system, and also that some of his emails are getting routed to folks' junk mail folders for some reason. So check your junk mail to be sure he hasn't written you, and if you haven't already written him try writing at the [email protected] address. I know that one was working as of a couple of days ago.

Good luck with your eggs! I just ordered some Wellie eggs from him myself, and I've got my fingers crossed!

I just saw Goody's picture. He is gorgeous. You definitely kept your two best ones and kept the two different types everyone says you should have. I wish I had gotten one Rooster that was more black bodied. Even my black breasted Rooster really has a bit too much color. But they are still continuing to change at 7 month so who knows how they will finish up.

Yeah, he's always been a pleasant guy and very very knowledgeable...I feel like he'll hold my hand all the way, not at all "above" helping if I need it, you know...a real nice, genuinely interested in poultry kinda guy! I'm just smartin about these circumstances...and a few others involved with this arrangement right now....I really was shocked to have them sent without warning - if I hadnt had room in my incubator, which has alot of other eggs in it right now - it would have been aborting my other chicks in the middle of development to put these eggs in the bator anyhow...so I feel like I jinxed myself! But I got my second incubator out to put the ones in it in tomorrow on day 18....but Wills eggs arent even here yet!!!

I'll still leave my Genesis 1588 running and waiting for them though...they have to be here....I dont know if I should turn it off, clean it real quick...and set it back up...or let it run continuously since nothing has hatched or anything in it (I'm taking the other eggs out to hatch?).....

Oh, I'm kinda a nut...I have separate spam folders on both of my accounts, and I look at each email just to make sure I DONT miss anything???

Thanks for reminding me though, I'll make sure on my end!

Request for Maran info:

We currently raise Golden Comets, we have 50 hens and 7 roos. My son helps and is really good with them. (Really he does most the work and enjoys it). A little info he is a preteenager, I dont like to put to much info out on net. Well anyway he has seen Marans and their eggs, he thinks they are great and loves the dark brown egg color.

Well anyway he wants to take his earnings from what we have paid him on our egg sales ( We pay him a percentage on each dozen sold, trying to instill a good work ethic and the value of working for what you want) and buy some Marans. Yeah he wants to start his own business.

I would not post this but he has been saving for 7 months and has enough to get started. I figure it will be a good learning experiece for him.

So now to my questions: ( I know by now most of you have quit reading, sorry for the long post)

He wants to raise them, incubate eggs, sell fertile eggs, show them, and of course he wants to make money back on what he put out.

So what would you all recommend as far as a type of Maran breed?

He has $200 to buy stock with, Mom and I are gonna let him use our feed ( till he gets on his feet ..HA..HA) He is helping me build the coop for them now, using some stuff we have around the farm.

Any help and advice would be appreciated. I know nothing about Marans. So any info would be greatly appreciated, along with sources of chicks. Again sorry for the long post, just trying to set my little man up for success. Thanks and God bless.

Hmm, sounds like if your son is going to go into the family business, and he's going to use your feed and has $200 to buy stock, etc...he's a sharp little guy!!!

Marans themselves not only are a beautiful breed that lay a dark egg, they are steeped in history and a wide range of politics that keep issues stirred up from shore to shore, between the UK, France and U.S.A. about such things as breed standards, egg color, purpose of the bird, etc.....

Many people who get into Marans have a cause or purpose - it can be a serious matter and I would ask that you watch over your son, him being a pre-teen, as he could easily be taken advantage of? Because many people who get into Marans only got in to them to make money off of the Marans Madness, the dark egg craze.

There are tons of birds/eggs available for high prices that do NOT meet what the current efforts are under way to have accepted into the APA as the American Standard.

There are tons of eggs available for sale that do NOT come in the range of acceptable colors on the Marans color scale as in anything over a 4....but people will still sell them to you for a really nice price.

Help your son by doing the research or we here can hook you up with the names of the serious breeders, and you can get "real" stock...some have them here even!! It takes patience and education....or your son may end up with something else and have to start all over again? That would be sad.

As for sources of chicks - I would recommend Will Morrow of Whitmore Farms for chicks - from what I have seen of his set up and heard of his reputation so far - but I havent raised his birds yet....so I dont know. I do know in my dealings with him so far, he is great to correspond with! Very accessible and personable!

Ooops, I havent been on my soapbox in a loooong time.....it's a long ways down there........
