...what is the attitude of the chicken in question? By which I mean, mine never stop moving much, and their body (and back) angle changes significantly when they're on the move. And if they're in an unfamiliar situation (like in a cage), they tend to kind of "squat" and look weird. It's proving very difficult for me to evaluate questions of angle objectively, because I can't make my chickens POSE!

LOLOL.....well quite......I know what you mean

Really I think they mean in their relaxed, most normal position......standing not particularly looking up or down. just standing relaxed.

Thank you for mentioning this! I think the reason people keep talking about this is that there is a genuine (hopefully genuine-ahahha) misunderstanding on this issue. I have read posts from a couple of people who have been breeding Marans for a while now who stated that the red breasted roosters carry for Wheaten. When I posted back to them that the French site clearly states that ER/ER genetic make up is responsible for an unstable, varying distribution of color on the rooster's breast and the hen's hackles that has to be balanced when selecting for breeding stock, I either got no answer back or one that didn't address my comment at all.
I did get one interesting response back from one person who said he believed it was possible that the Wheaten genes involved in this are different than the simple recessives that cause the BCs to occasionally throw a buff-colored chick. Very interesting, but again, the French site information doesn't state that at all.
And as you said, apparently it doesn't take a lot work to correct the problem so it probably doesn't merit all the controversy.

HA! My Orpingtons do that all the time, but the Marans? If they ever do relax, I haven't seen it!

OK, you've given me a mission. Sometime this week, I'm going to go outside, get settled with a camera and a long lens, and WAIT THEM OUT. I WILL catch someone relaxing--I WILL!

Yes! I saw that and I was thinking, it doesn't really seem like this person has actually read the proposed APA standard posted at the MCC site. AHAHAHAH. That's pretty funny actually. But it did stir up a fuss, didn't it?

Ok - here is my big bubba - please tell me that he will soon get more copper coloring. I know he will fill out more - I think he is still kind of thin breasted and scruffy looking.

With his always best friend Pipsqueak the serama (they had a falling out the other day and Pip was bound and determined to take the big guy down - HA!)

With his new love Cruella the frizzled cochin:

And a different angle so that you can see how he is kind of thin through the chest still and all scruffy feathered:

I'm concerned that he is a giant dinosaur clutz right now. Is this normal? Maybe he has gotten so big, so fast that the part of the brain that co-ordinates his movements hasn't caught up yet.

One of the things I like best with the Marans is how quickly they mature. I'd expect your thoughts on this would probably be the case .....it happens that way with humans too. I was worried about my daughter when she had her adolescent growth spurt.....she couldn't walk without crashing into things.

I noticed, with the Marans coming directly from France (to UK), while the general shape was more or less the same, there was quite difference in how bulky the lines were. I discussed this with Derrie Watchhorn, &, like me, she felt the chunkier birds were more correct. What is the consensus of opinion regarding this in USA ?

I'd expect the best place to compare would be on the Marans Club de France website.
(Oh & there's bickering over there too.....well at least there was..... When we went over to buy some birds from a particular chap he told us we needed to join the club....I told him we were members .....but he explained that it was a different club.....the "National Marans Club" & said some less than flattering things about the birds of a certain member of the other club

...So in order to sit on the fence we were members of both clubs for a few years .

LOL. Well yeah, they are busy....that's another wonderful thing I love about the Marans.....they do enjoy life. Don't they really look as if they get really busy enjoyng every second, while free ranging?

It's a shame to have to put them in a pen.

I'm actually alternating pens for free-ranging, so that everyone gets to go outside. They have nice large yards, but no fun greenery and leaves and rocks and things to play hide-and-go-seek in. I kind of hate that everyone can't be out all the time...I'm working toward just having only my Marans roos out with the combined flocks. That way I can have my purebred eggs, my Orp/Marans crossbreds, and everyone can freerange, too.

It's really funny to hear the big bubba go "peep" still. I'm guessing when he gets to crowing it will be really deep sounding.
