I was assured that this one was NOT white, but I believe he is. The breeder thinks he is splash. I am thinking white.

Here's a neat story:

I answered a Craigslist ad for strawberry plants, and got an AMAZING price on established plants that will bear this summer. Yaay! The guy gave me such a deal, that I took him a dozen eggs, half of which were Marans eggs.

When I gave him the eggs, he said, "WOW, are these Marans eggs?" I said yes, and he said that his wife had been raising Cuckoo Marans for the last few years, but that her eggs were nowhere near that dark, and that she would love to have eggs like that. He asked if I would sell them some eggs, and I said, "Feel free to hatch those." So they are, and then I'm going to get some more to them in mid-April.

THEN, we got to talking about poultry in general, and when he found out I had Narragansett turkeys, he asked the amazing question, "Do you have any Toms for sale?" I nearly shrieked for joy.

Turns out his father has a flock of hens but lost his two Toms last year. So I quoted him a price for a pair of adult Toms.

When we arranged a pick-up time for the Toms, I jokingly said, "How about free roosters? ALL YOU CAN CARRY!" He answered that his dad would be happy to take up to SIX roosters, just because he likes having them around his garden, eating bugs, and to look at. So along with the turkeys, I packed up two White Rocks, two Cuckoo Marans, and two Black Copper Marans (the ones with the most excessive yellow on the hackles). Bye-bye, boys!

By the time he'd come and picked up the birds, we had also managed to make one more exchange--I had 10 pounds of organic Yukon Gold seed potatoes that I couldn't use, and he brought me 3 gallons of fresh raw cow's milk for cheesemaking from his parents' Guernseys! (This last bit was not a sale or trade, since that would be ILLEGAL in Arkansas, of course.)

I wish. My actual neighbors leave a lot to be desired (speaking of which, the house next to ours is for sale, CHEAP--anyone wanna move in?).

I also sold a turkey pair to a very nice family of about 8. The whole crew came to pick them up, and I had to laugh when they loaded the turkeys into a dog crate in the front of their van's passenger seats.

I have no idea, but it might be worth checking out. Arkansas is CHEAP. And we seem to be less affected by the current economy than most states...probably because we're such a poor state to begin with. I'm seeing "NOW HIRING" signs all over the place.

My friend and groomer of my dogs is from PA, and she went back there three or four years ago, for a couple of years. She wound up moving her family back here because it was just financially easier on her family.
