How tricky are black eyes to breed out? I have two hens who are otherwise nice, and lay very good eggs, but they have black eyes. I'm trying to decide what to do with them.

I had 4 power outages while i was incubating two different cluthces of black copper marans eggs..I got 4 out of the first batch (two pair) and two out of eight on the second..The second suffered thru three power outages..

I was kinda hoping the top one was a pullet because of the smaller completely white/yellow comb but Im not holding my breath..

The boys will develop larger and redder in combs in a few weeks, although that's not always 100%.

I guess I should add. One is black with a few white feathers on the tip of the wing, the other is the same only has some brown/copper on its face.

I only have crossed black eyes on red eyes once. I put my best copper black roo in with my black, probably Ray Valentine bred, clean legged marans hens. All four hatched out feather legged, two were black eyed and two were red eyed. Two had copper hackles, two did not. So! One is a copper hackled, black eyed, feather legged roo. One pullet is copper hackled and black eyed, feather legged, one is black hackled, red eyed, feather legged, and one is black hackled, black eyed, feather legged. That is all I can tell you so far.

My last four, I promise you could tell from the hatch..The roosters combs were 4X larger than the pullets from the get..

Some of them were born w/ giant combs, but I had one in my first hatch that had almost no comb and is now a 6 month old roo.
