Hi everyone..... I havent bragged yet about these so here goes....

Im working on solid blue marans..... so this little girl is a favorite!!
It is a photo of a little Blue Splash Marans pullet. (check out the feathers on them legs!!) She is 5-6 weeks old.
Her mom is my darkest egg layer (#7-8) She is a solid dark blue marans. Daddy is a light blue copper marans.
So far this spring I have hatchd 6 splash chicks from this breeding pair! as well as several blues and a few blacks.

Presumably these late developing or not developing birds are not from the same breeder? (Short wing feathers too?) How curious.....I wonder what causes it. It wouldn't be a trait I'd want in my birds.

You know, this is quite a new project in the US and we are all in an experimental period. There are various lines that have been independently concentrating on different aspects; some are now being combined. We have a lot to learn and discover. Let's not be guilty of throwing the baby out with the bath water.

I dont know if the breeder is the same or not. Her birds look wonderful. I wonder if it's just slow developing feathering? I sure hope so. So far it appears all the females looking chicks have no tails... appearing rumpless. I dont care for rumpless birds myself, and I wouldnt breed these hens if they are in fact rumpless. Their wing feathering is fine.

Peachick, thats a beautiful chick! Hey, have your Ameraucanas started to lay again? I'm dying for some of those blue eggs of yours.

I'm sorry, I hadn't meant to offend. Goodness, I've got some pretty strange birds myself.
Two or three people seem to have commented on having rumpless birds. Someone else said that their bird which had been slow to develop. I don't know what had been going on. Certainly seems like something one would want to keep an eye on.
I have experienced (with some beautiful wyandottes, as it happens) what can happen when one turns a blind eye to a negative trait in favour of a beautiful bird. It was a learning experience for me. I'd be surprised if rumplessness or late developing tail & flights is something someone is working on.
Good luck....no offense meant.

The chicks have gotten BIG... Here's my update of the boys... I was so impressed with how pretty these guys have gotten that I didn't get any good pics of the girls. They are around 9 weeks old. The chickens on the other side of the fence are easter eggers.

I'm excited to find that my blue copper rooster has copper finally appearing!
