Niki, does Pokerface (you come up with the funniest names) have black eyes? I have a couple of hens with black eyes, but *none* of my roosters have had them. I couldn't tell if it was just the lighting or not.

I dunno if that helps or not. LOL
OK, good. Like I said, I've only seen red eyes in the boys so far, but about 1/4 of the pullets have black eyes, something I'll be working on weeding out in the future.

well good now i know that that color is considered "red' lol! I had been reading on here about how their eye color is important but me being a dummy never thought to look at mine. I'm glad his eyes arent fully black because I really like him already and hope to use him in my small breeding program
I would have used him anyhow though haha and just culled out other birds with his look.

I'm sorry, I hadn't meant to offend. Goodness, I've got some pretty strange birds myself.
Good luck....no offense meant.
Oh, no "feelings" here. I was just commenting that Marans are a new entity and we are all on a learning curve. And just trying to explain what I am seeing occuring in the breed as it gets more popular and scrutinized--diversity and interesting traits.
With my comment about different foundation breeders concentrating on different things, I was not suggesting that someone would be trying to develop a rumpless variety. I don't think there are any rumpless Marans out there...never heard of it. Just trying to offer reassurance to the poster whose chick had short tail feathers that that is not the case, that they will grow in!
My slow-to-lengthen tail feathered cockerel is from a 1st and 2nd generation combination of 3 prominent lines. The breeder I got the eggs from was very non-plussed when she saw pictures of him, reassuring me that they would grow out just fine, and pointing to him as her "pick"...The tail-feather thing seems to be rather common and likely that some of the most gorgeous birds in the breed began that way!
OnTheSpots eggies I got, I stopped turning them yesterday and since I have staggered hatches I had eggs to turn ina tray beside them. I pointed them out to hubby to say "look these are finanlly going tobe hatching soon!" and I look down and one is already pipped!
They aren't due until thursday so imagine my suprise.
No complaints here.
Only one is pipped but that's ONE baby that's more than likely coming into this world for sure (well i can't say that with 100% certainty but i feel excited feeling like it'll be in my hands and fluffy here maybe tomorrow sometime)!
I've hatched several hundreds of chicken eggs already, but something about THESE specific eggs, the not even 21 days have went by horribly slow! I felt like i've had those things for OVER a month already if not more lol! I think it's just because I'm so excited about them....with good reason they're ONTHESPOTS!!!
I got 5 bc marans out of the eggies!!!! The last two just hatched a bit ago...the other eggs either had DOA undeveloped chicks in them (two of them did dunno why they failed), and a few had no development in them and one pipped and then died
.
Three hatched from pullet eggies, and the other two hatched from the larger eggs
they're drying off now and will be taking pics once they're all poofed up
