I'm sorry, I'll hope for luck for both of us next time.

I have noticed my broodies have much better luck in Fall and spring then after June gets going. And by July - hatches suck here in the bator or under a broody. So I'm closed down til Fall.

I finally get to post some photos of my Maran eggs. They are from McMurray and I know they are not the super dark egg, but with the couple that are laying I'm not totally disappointed.

There is a white egg for reference.

ETA: There are some of every breed I have in the photo.

Thanks!!

I love all my eggs but I get the most excited about the dark eggs. The white store bought egg is a "large" and it makes my eggs look like small pullet eggs, for sure.

I don't know where that yellowish egg came from. I posted a bigger photo of it in the egg laying thread. It's a mystery!

I have a few BC Marans chicks that are about a month old. Several of them have very large combs

I think they must be roos, but someone told me that you just can not tell that earlier because BC Marans are hard to sex.

Any comments from the Maran experts?

Okay, can someone clear this up for me? I pronounce marans as.. mare-N 's. Almost like errands, but with a 'ma' sound and leave the d out. But their is a friend who swears up and down that I am saying it wrong and that its.. Ma-ran 's. As if you ran somewhere. But this is also the same person who thinks EE/Ameraucanas/Araucanas are all basically the same. And that you can get true Ar. and Am. from a hatchery.

To answer the BC Marans question, in our (somewhat limited) experience, we would suspect that any BC with any pink in its comb at 4 weeks old is a roo. But there are also different lines of Marans that mature at different rates. So it's a little early to tell.

We've heard a lot of different opinions on the pronunciation of Marans, too. But since they were named for a town in France, the French pronunciation is probably the correct one.
