Drom thanks for directing me to the picture in post 4113. It takes sooo much time to go back through this whole thread and read it. I read it every few weeks or so. I appreciate that you remembered the pic and directed me to it.
I now totally get what you are referring to as mossiness - I feel so enlightened.
Thanks! Yep all Marans. They are out of my main breeding pen which has a very dark blue copper roo over a blue hen, a blue copper hen, 2 black copper hens and a copper splash hen.
I put my mossy/partidgey looking ones (pullets) on craigslist for $50 each, explaining their color defect an they usually sold same day, with follow up calls of people frustrated they had missed out.

"Culling" just means removing them from the breeding flock. What you do with em -- eat their eggs, sell the birds, eat the birds -- is up to you.
I dunno enough about the genetics of the mossy trait to know what is best to do with the siblings. I now have a group of BCs that has this problem, so I am starting out by monitoring the chicks with the least amount of brown in their down. One step at a time!

$50. each for a cull? Are you kidding me ??? That is just crazy! I wouldn't pay that much for one that is NOT a cull ! Gee, with all the culls I am likely to have, I could get rich selling culls (at that price!) ....
