OK ... now for the (I'm sure) stupidest questions of all ....
Keep in mind, I am new with poultry and know nothing of genetics ....

When you breed all these different Marans, do you pen each kind separately? I mean, separate
Black Copper
Blue Copper
Black
Blue
Birchen
Splash
Wheaten
Is there both Blue, and Blue Copper?

Are there different kinds of Birchen, ie blue Birchen, black Birchen?

Tell me what this is, just plain Birchen?

I would pen them all separate according to color and also according to line. Some colors like blue and blue copper have other colors that are with them due to the way the andelusian blue gene works. You may also put your blacks and copper blacks together to improve coppering by taking away black or adding black depending.

yes there is blue and blue copper and black and black copper... yes there is blue and also blue birchen and black and birchen black...

I am not sure what you call what you have...It is blue cuckoo of some pattern... Not really a cuckoo person so I can't exactly say... Looks like a cross of silver cuckoo and blue birchen and cuckoo...Someone else may have a better idea... I don't deal with that as a rule.

Well I have both birchen black and birchen blue.... They do not have stripes (ie cuckoo)..so I am up a stump. They don't look anything like that. Anyone else out there care to venture a guess???

You can pen the black copper and blue copper together -- and you can pen the black, blue, and splash together. You have to be careful with the splash, though. Often people call birds "splash" when they are actually splash COPPER, or splash BIRCHEN -- not plain splash, but splash plus a pattern. And if you pen a splash copper with the black and/or blue birds, you'll mess up your breeding program.

Yes. There are also blue birchen and blue wheaten. Hmmm, also blue salmon, but those are very rare.

Your birds appear to be birchen with barring. I have been told that it is fairly common for birchen flocks to carry barring in this country, for some reason. I am not at all clar about whether this is supposed to be regular barring, or another type. One of my own splash birchen roos shows this trait.

Hi there,
I am not working with the blues but several people who post here are. So, there is a Blue Birchen, they are very beautiful birds and I haven't seen the young cockerels only the roosters. It looks to me like there might be something else in there with him. He's blue for sure but it almost looks like there is some cuckoo markings on him. What is his breeding? What are the parents? Onthespot is working with blues and knows quite a bit about them and I think Amazondoc knows about the Birchens.
