Now, please tell me these are plain, simple, "Splash Marans!" LOL I think they are so pretty. I only have the 2 girls. I would love to have a roo to go with them. Anyone have one for me? These pictures are old. They are now 18 weeks old.

Those are very lovely Marans... If you want to have more of the same... you need a splash roo... They breed true...If you want all blue birds... you need a black one...

They are very pretty girls. Unfortunately, it can be VERY hard to tell if they are splash coppers, and ESPECIALLY hard to tell if they're splash birchens. The best way to tell is to know the flock they came from.

I dunno. I can't tell from the picture.

Here's the sort of thing you're looking for:

See the scattered red in the feathers? You need to look closely all over the birds' bodies for any red or brown feathers, or even parts of feathers with red or brown. If you find any, then the birds are splash copper.

Unfortunately, it's nearly impossible to tell whether they are splash birchen. Fortunately, splash birchen will be pretty rare, so there's less chance of them being that.

Put a black for all blue birds and put a splash for all splash birds or put a blue for blue and splash birds... Take your pick.

If you get an oddball... cull it... that simple.

Oh, thank you so much! I will look carefully. If there is no red or brown feathers, then is called, plain, "Splash?" Or, is it something else? Does, "Splash," always go along with something else? ie Birchen Splash, Blue Splash?

Oh, I forgot to mention --

Those colored feathers will probably not show up til the girls are mature, so you should wait at least 6 months before you reach any conclusions. If you don't see any at that time, then breed them to a blue or black roo and see what the chicks are like!

A "splash" bird that is based on E (extended black) is just called "splash". If it's based on one of the patterning genes (like wheaten or birchen), then you add that pattern onto the name.

Oh, and as for "blue splash" -- that's just a term some people use that doesn't really mean anything. Ignore it -- it's the very same thing as just saying "splash".

Enjoy your girls!
