Any color of marans is capable of laying the darkest eggs of any type of chicken, but black coppers generally lay the darkest ones. Og course there are exceptions depending on how good the breeding stock is for each variety.

There is someone on this forum who posted a picture of Marans eggs from a Cuckoo that came from Ideal several months back. I tried to find the old post for you but I couldn't. Typically Marans from the commercial hatcheries don't lay very dark eggs. However, as I recall the eggs in the picture looked pretty good and I got an Easter Egger from Ideal that lays absolutely gorgeous greenish blue eggs. But it's best to see if you can find a pullet from a private breeder of Marans in your area because there is a better chance you will get darker eggs than with a hatchery bird.
But if you want to see if anyone has Ideal Cuckoos, you might post a thread with that in the title line and see if you will get some pictures.

If there are no private breeders in your area, then the feed stores are the place to pick up just a couple chicks. They order from hatcheries and you just go to them and pick out your chicks. But I also think that My Pet Chicken ships small numbers of birds. I don't know how close you are to state lines but there are private Marans breeders in Iowa, IL and MI
Woops! I just pulled up a map and realized you would have to row across Lake Michigan to get to MI. Scratch that one.
Genetics Question: What happens when you use a BC rooster over a Golden Cuckoo hen?
I have one random GC that is really nice...I am not really wanting to get another roo. Any ideas of what the combination would be? Doesn't black cover white so the offspring would be bad looking BC with some having the wrong leg color.. If so..not worth it.
Option B... Silver Cuckoo and Golden Cuckoo hen... I think white washes so the offspring would lose the nice color...is this correct?
Option C. Black Marans Rooster (no copper) Has black legs.
This is a question for our genetic geniuses.... of which.. I am not. If someone has a website that explains this with the copper and leg color dominance...LMK
