I just remember reading a post by blackdotte, that alot of the problem in the USA, is that too many people just breed them all, and stick every egg in the incubator. I dunno ... I am really gonna try hard to keep the breeding to the best ones only.

Well ... if I get any decent ones out of all these chicks!

Kathyinmo.... I totally understand your thinking... however if Pinkchick has everything else right and she has a roo that is unfalted except for too much red she may end up with the right recipe for nearly perfect flock. Maybe a percentage of them will come out correct... Either way.... The only way to know is to breed them and have a look... It is a shame to have hard to get things like good eye color.. correct length of back etc...and then omit a bird that under ideal circumstances can produce the desired offspring. I would throw the dice if it is a good bird...If it doesn't produce what she is after then it is a cull....(a really nice black marans)

Here is the quote I was referring to. The point being ... I am really gonna try hard to be selective. Heck, I don't even know what my chicks will mature into yet! My oldest ones are now about 19 weeks old, and I am just assessing them! But, if they are sorely lacking, I will not breed them.

Thanks! I really think the darker hen and the roo would do pretty good but then again you never know. From looking at the pictures i showed you (I know they arent very good) Would you think they would stand a chance at a show anyway? Do they meet the requirements for 5 month old marans or should i wait until they are older? Thanks again!
Bri

I would wait on the roo for a while till he is full plumage. The pullet I would get some weight on her, by the time you do she should be fine for just about any show.

I've never been to a show, and am quite new to the poultry world. I just heard a person pronounce Marans differently than I had heard before. What is the correct pronunciation of Marans?

Kathy~
I have heard it pronounced 3 different ways.

Muh-rans
Mare-ans
Marr-ans

I believe the correct pronunciation is Muh-rans and that is how I say it

I completely agree with breeding the best birds.......but if one has a bird that will lend its good qualities to their offspring, I feel that can be beneficial. Since my gal came from BC and Bl-C parents she has the genetics in there, so theoretically speaking, crossed with the right roo I could get some babies that may be more correctly colored and hopefully they would inherit her good traits (correct eye color, body type and egg color) while the roo could lend his genes to the feather color.
I think I will do test matings with her and see what happens...it is worth a try right? I was just wondering what everyone else would do.
Here are 2 photos of her (she needs a bath and is dirty from the roo). Tell me what you think and be honest, I have thick skin and value all opinions.
