Pink chick... I would use that pullet on an over-red rooster and set a couple eggs. She has the genetics... they are just masked by too much black... That is what my understanding is... Give it a whirl... If she is crossed with something over red then the babies should come out with ideal coloration. It is a shame to waste all of her good traits if she has the potential on the right rooster.

If you set them... Let us know how it come out.

I have six black pullets I'm keeping for breeding. Most are nearing POL now and I will most likely put them aside in their own pen with the most complimentary colored rooster I have, and keep track of what the pullets come out like. I'll keep y'all posted, shouldn't be more than several months before we'll know the answer, LOL.

:)Hello everyone, I am fairly new to chickens and have a black copper marans hen named Beyonce who is about 10 months old. She is a month older than the rest of my chickens, and I got her when she was 4 months. I really wanted a marans and went against my gut because I wanted one so badly and got one off craigslist from a guy who claimed his birds were out of bev davis lines. I paid $40 for her, she wound up having lice... yuck. I've got her all cleaned up now, and she is very healthy, and started laying eggs about a month ago. This past week she has started... crowing. Yes, crowing. It doesn't sound like typical rooster crowing, it almost sounds like a beagle barking. She will do it in the mornings, and although I am allowed roosters where I live, I don't have the urge to have any. Out of all the chickens she is the only flighty one because I didn't get her as a baby, she hates to be held and is antisocial. So, I am considering finding her a new home... I love the dark eggs, and she is a beautiful bird, but if she keeps up this crowing business things may need to change!
So, I am turning to all you Marans experts for advice. How does she look quality wise for a BC marans? What would you ask for her if you were to sell her? Where do you think her eggs land on the color scale? Other helpful information: Her eyes are dark brown, and one leg has one feather on it, the other leg has a feather that comes and goes. Thanks for any information

Sorry for the heavy images... there is a time line to see how she has grown. In the most recent one she is holding her tail lower than usual, its pouring down rain and she isn't too happy haha.

Ha! what a character! i would take her in a heart beat. But she doesnt reallly look "pure" to me. I would keep her and maybe (if you want to) get a nice calm rooster that willl crow occasionaly. This might calm her down and make her not want to crow or be so flighty.
Just my thoughts,
Bri

Thanks! I really think the darker hen and the roo would do pretty good but then again you never know. From looking at the pictures i showed you (I know they arent very good) Would you think they would stand a chance at a show anyway? Do they meet the requirements for 5 month old marans or should i wait until they are older? Thanks again!

Maybe you could get a better idea of what they should look like at the Marans site ...

From your pictures, you can't see enough to judge. How many comb points, what degree tail set, the colorong, etc ...

I am no expert ... actually, I am new and just starting a flock. I can tell you one thing ... I have none that I would show .... YET! I have about 50, and most are chicks or growing out. I think it takes alot of work and time, before you have one in your flock that is show worthy. Just my opinion... Maybe one could get lucky and have show worthy Marans quickly, I dunno ...
