Okay, here once again is the breakdown for working with the blue gene:

black = bl+/bl+
blue = Bl/bl+
splash = Bl/Bl

black x black --> 100% black chicks
black x blue --> 50% black chicks, 50% blue chicks
black x splash --> 100% blue chicks
blue x blue --> 25% black chicks, 50% blue chicks, 25% splash chicks
blue x splash --> 50% blue chicks, 50% splash chicks
splash x splash --> 100% splash chicks

Thank you, I appreciate your posting that. I have read it before but I guess I am just a bit confused. I did not realize that even though the black came from a "black/blue parentage that the "black" ones would not carry the blue gene and pass it along down generations if bred to a chicken who carried the same traits and genes.

I have a hen that is pure BCMarans-that doesn't look like a BCMarans and have been told that she possibly carries a Wheaton gene. So that makes me go huh? If black is black and can't throw blue when one of the donating parents are blue then why can they throw Wheaton?

WHAT? If that is so, then it seems to me .... all the people who simply want dark egg layers, with no consideration to the SOP, would be begging for the culls, yeah?

Germaine .... I hear what you are saying. That confuses me, too.

You got it... Send it my way... ha ha... I actually have two just like that in my breakfast egg layer pen... I want to shellac the eggs because the "brightness" is unbelievable.. Got any pix of the fabulous eggs?

The most important thing is that she doesn't have a salmon-colored breast. Her breast is light, yes -- but not pinkish. The variety is called "salmon" because of that salmon-pink breast in the hens.

I don't know what she is. There are some black coppers that have lost lots and lots of melanizers, and that may be what she is. But that is just a guess.

I just took some new photos of my little Marans flock. I only have a trio right now and am working on improving what I have. Bev Davis line.

"pinkish", I see now. I just looked at some pics to see what kind of Marans she was. That is why I called her a Golden Salmon. It looks like they are pretty rare, I can't find any anywhere. I guess I'll leave her with my BCMs, hatch some of her chicks and see what I get.

Thanks,
Nate

Because the blue gene isn't the same thing as the wheaten gene.
