His conformation is nice. His comb is kind of beefy, but it doesn't have a lot of extra points. does he have white feathers all down his shanks, or is that the lighting. If he does, that would be my least favorite thing about him. Also, those two long sickle feathers are kinda long and stiff and pointy. Next year I think they will be longer, and stiffer and pointier. WAY better than a squirrel tail though. I like his overall look.

I wonder if anyone has ever seen eggs like the ones my wheaten marans sometimes lays. They're really large and they usually look like the two dark ones in this picture:

Dark mahogany and a little speckly.

She's laid a few like this though:

The dark spot is where I whetted my finger and ran it over the egg. There's a violet almost grey coating on top of the mahogany color. The crazy thing was that when this wet spot dried, it went back to the same violet color, it didn't get wiped off. This is one of the more extreme examples - sometimes it's a lighter more translucent coating. The folks I bought her from said that her mother did the same thing. She wasn't laying yet when I got her, but we all hoped she would follow her mother's genetics, and it looks like she has.

Here she is:

Has anyone seen an egg like this? Any ideas what the cause is?

Thanks Kathyinmo! I guess I should have gone through all the posts before I asked

From what the breeders I bought her from said, I'd guess this trait is genetic. I just wonder what inside of her is making it happen.
