I knew I should've said something else.

Wynette, you have the best Marans in combination of bird AND egg. SoCal has, to my experience, the best eggs but not the best birds. And of course Bev Davis has the best consistancy for both bird and egg.

You know I like yours the best though!

- Your eggs are darker than my Bev Davis eggs, and much redder than them too, which makes even light ones keepers, because they're orange not brown. I've always wanted an Orange egg.

Remember, I bought your eggs, not some from California.

the only other male chicken i own is a black silkie rooster thats kept with general population
the 3rd picture is a wheaten marans rooster , as far as i know the birds are not crossed to other breeds . all i did was bought eggs from bev davis , and buddy hennery lines ,,,, hatched some eggs from them , they grew up and laied some eggs that ive posted pictures of wich i hatched to get the young birds shown in the picteure. the egg color i am getting right now is a result of the two breeders work , the weather , the diet the chicken eat and luck.i wonder now what the egg color will be in the off spring but thats 7 months away befor the chicks im hatching from the cross of breeders line (davis & henery ).

That hen in the third picture. Was she crossed with a welsummer? I have one right now who looks exactly like that one except she has light blue legs with white feathering on the legs. She is beautiful, and we named her Lily. Her blue legs are confusing me however. She is the only one out of that test hatch to have them, and I know the two breeds ( Rooster is a BCM ) she was crossed with aren't mixed breeds. I'm hoping I get more like her in the future.

The hen in third picture looks like our Lily we hatched out 8 weeks ago. She is a cross from a test batch I did back in Jan. The hen is a welsummer, the rooster is one of Wynette's BCM. I'm charging up my camera batteries so I can go out there a grab a picture of her. She looks exactly like her except for the legs. She has light blue legs. She was the only one out our test hatch that looks like that.

If you look at the quills you can see the darker feathers to the lighter feathers coming in. I do not know for sure till 2wks , but it looks like I may have 3 roos and 3 pullets. I hope I'm wrong on the roos But ok if I'm right.
Thanks Berkeleysprings!
